Wonderful historic and characterful cafe serving excellent tea and coffee and great food. A trip to the toilet in the cellar is an experience in itself, through a myriad of historical items. Service was attentive and friendly, and the food was excellent and great value. We had one breakfast bap - virtually a full English and a very generous pot of tea at a great price. Plus poached eggs with black pudding (very, very good black pudding) and divine cheese scones. Endless variety of top quality packaged coffees and teas to take away too. You get a real sense of being somewhere steeped in history. A perfect brunch stop on our journey further north, so much more a break than a motorway cafe.

Would really recommend the coffee of the month subscription service if you’re keen on trying a variety of roasts to explore. I don’t get through a lot of coffee so the ability to get beans I can grind myself and just 250g a month is perfect - it makes it much more affordable than other roasters. The beans stay fresh in the sealable bag and once ground the coffee kept perfectly in an airtight container. Ideal for my small moka pot. Nothing beats getting it made for you, but hassle-free delivery to your door is pretty close.

If you’re looking for a great breakfast option in Carlisle, look no further! The coffee is delicious (they’ve been doing it for a while) and the food menu is great, using locally sourced ingredients. They have a lot of coffees to choose from for home use as well. Normally I wouldn’t recommend this, but pay a visit to the toilet downstairs while you’re there: there’s basically a whole museum of coffee history and other artifacts on the way down!

We popped in for brunch and although we had missed the window for a cooked breakfast (breakfast is only served until 11:30am) we were happy to stay put & order something else. The place was pretty busy but I didn't consider it busy enough to warrant such poor service. We were seated fairly quickly but from there, our experience went quickly downhill. It took quite some time for our order to be taken but we were gabbing so that wasn't the end of the world however, all three dishes were delivered at different times. My friend's order was wrong - She's vegetarian and specifically asked for cheese instead of bacon in her croissant but was given both cheese and bacon so that was sent back. We ordered a pot of tea for two but we struggled to get a cup each from the small teapot. We asked for milk twice and only managed to secure some when my pal, got up from her seat & asked for a third time. Another member of staff informed us that there was no more croissants so my friend settled on a cheese sandwich but my the time her food arrived, our other friend & I had both finished eating. The food was decent (I had a prawn sandwich on bread bread, our pal had a bacon sandwich & my friend finally received a cheese sandwich) but the service was so underwhelming that I doubt we'll...

Quirky little shop hidden away from the main drag. Sadly I've had to amend my 5 star review after having two awful visits recently. Last week I asked for hot milk with my coffee as plant milks have a tendency to curdle when cold. They brought cold milk and when I asked if I could have hot milk and more of it brought they brought me back the same quantity in a larger jug in a huff. It's not my problem if they can't get the order right to start with but I felt I was being blamed. Today I revisited and again the experience was worse than expected. I asked for more hot milk again and waited and waited until I went to the counter to find the waitresses gossiping and oh dear! They'd forgotten me! When I asked for sugar with the coffee I got white which if you are a coffee and tea specialist is a bit of a faux pas. I'll only be revisiting to get my free coffee and after that I'm sure I'll find somewhere else where they get the basics of service right. Shame that things seemed to have gone downhill post covid opening as little places need to survive but bad service shouldn't...

This cafe is very friendly, lovely old atmosphere and lovely, kind helpful staff. Their food is delicious with lots of options. I had their Vegetarian breakfast which I requested. The hash browns were not the crispiest but their fried onions were one of the most delicious portions I’d had with a breakfast before. The only disappointment was that I asked for they got confused between vegetarian and vegan so they gave me the vegan breakfast meaning I had no egg. I didn’t correct them as I was in hurry to catch a train but they said as I paid they certainly would have solved it for me. Overall delicious food, lovely old fashioned atmosphere with kind helpful staff. Highly...
