My wife and I stopped off here for breakfast as a little treat after seeing the 12 week scan of our baby. Shop is very small but it was cute and creative with a minimalistic vibe. It’s shared seating so which I quite liked, so don’t be surprised to be sitting next to a stranger. It’s an open kitchen which is always great and they use as much local produce as possible. The lady that served us (Kate) was pleasant. The selection of food items isn’t vast which is my preference because you get a sense of quality over quantity. They also have seasonal options. I also get the impression that the menu is always adapting but keeps its favourites. They have a good drinks selection. We both got hot chocolates which were brilliant. In fact one of the best I’ve ever had. For food I opted for the granola which was lovely. We shared the sausage roll which came with a curried chutney. The pastry was flaky and the filling was tasty. The added chutney was delicious! I am usually not a fan of coffee but Kate recommended the coffee and walnut cake so I got it. I am glad I did because it was amazing! The cake had perfect texture and tasted amazing. Not too overpowering with coffee, just right. Finally, my wife got a cookie which was delicious. Overall, we throughly enjoyed our time at Kate’s. Great location, couldn’t fault it, even the toilet I liked. We’ll 100% be back. P.S. Since the shop is very small and quite popular there may not be available seating but they do takeaway so all good. There is also limited...
Read moreHot chocolate was very mild, but smooth and still quite enjoyable. It's well balanced, and there was a very thick layer of milk foam which I liked
Carrot cake was exemplary. Generous portion but more impressively there's a lot of thought that went into the components. From the orange zest on the cream cheese, to the bursts of acidity from the raisins that cuts thru the mild sweetness of the carrot cake, and even the slightly dense texture. It's really something, coming from someone who likes carrot cake a lot
Cheese scone was slightly dry (as I guess it's supposed to be?) in the middle, but otherwise the crunchy crust and the lovely perfume of cheddar is perfect. I doubt I'm ever going to taste one that's better than this in terms of the crust Also the butter from Aberdeen was very good, esp since it's well salted
Overall very high standards, they're the real deal in terms of technical proficiency and every other aspect...
Read moreWhen I travel I love to find things in more out of the way spaces. On a recent 10 day trip to Edinburgh I wanted to explore a few different areas away from the main tourist spots. In my research I found Kate’s. I was like it’s my name! Haha. I checked out the other reviews and this spot is well received so I figured I’d add my experience.
I got to have a quick chat with Kate’s mom who’d been there to do some of the baking. She was a really lovely lady. I ordered a cheddar scone and the citrus drizzle cake, and a latte.
The space is small, with merely shared table spaces. The decor is very cute and homey. The staff were very friendly at nice.
The latte was fabulous. The cheddar scone was a bit warm with some slightly salted butter, delicious! The citrus drizzle cake was excellent, moist, and the icing was just sweet and tangy enough.
Definitely worth checking out if you find yourself...
