My review is based on service alone, (or lack of)
Having previously visited Mowgli at multiple locations on a regular basis, both for work and pleasure, we were appalled at the way we were treated and spoken to by 2 members of staff working Saturday night 8th March around 7pm.
We were in town for the six nations and hadn’t planned to book anywhere for food, but called up on the off chance to see if there was any last minute availability.
We were told we could not book until around 2 hours later, but was told to walk down and wait as we would be able to wait for a table and be seated before the available time slot.
When we arrived we noticed numerous empty tables but were told they would not seat us ‘any time soon’ the earliest, being the original time slot we said was not suitable on the phone. When we explained what was discussed on the phone, the woman said we could not wait (despite being told we could on the phone)
We explained what was discussed and explained we walked across town based on the phone conversation and pointed out that there were numerous empty tables.
She then explained that these were booked for in an hours time and we would not eat that quickly (a bold prediction)
It was very disappointing to be turned away from a restaurant that was not full, maybe the brand has became successful enough to turn away customers?
We then asked for the managers name to feedback the treatment and no one could really answer, one moment the lady we spoke to was the manager, 2 minutes later it was a man.
We were also told that the person on the phone gave us the wrong info as they were a central reservations system who does not know how things work.
We left and went to tattu and spent £250 there.
Not only did they not want our money on this particular evening, they have also made us never want to use the chain again for the regular visits we usually make at their locations that are local to us.
One small encounter can make a lasting impression, for us, this level of service was enough to never spend money at this chain again.
Customer service and communication training is very much needed for those who handled this situation.
We would not have had an issue whatsoever, had we have been given accurate information in the first place, as we would not have bothered to have walked across town if there was no point in doing so.
It is a shame, as until now we have received excellent service from other locations where the staff and food have been great, hence using them on a...
Read moreThe food is close to authentic and it's not a misrepresentation of Indian cuisine so bonus points to that.
The Vegan Yoghurt Chat Bombs were soggy and they arrived very soon relatively to the main dishes which took a while to arrive. And there was no one to order for a drink in the meantime because one of us wanted to order a second drink. It would have been nice to have someone come after we finished the soggy too sweet chat bombs, it was far too sweet because the yoghurt and the tamarind sauce were not balanced properly and there's no point of having coriander garnished across every single dish. Quite an experimental attempt I must say.
It was a busy day and I wish there were more staff around because we were constantly trying to find someone around in the room and there were none, so it was not really good in terms of accessing the service when we know that the service is good. No complaints about the servers, waiter - they were calm and provided a no rushed service even if it was very busy.
The Dal is not supposed to be too sweet. It was sugar sweet not cinnamon syrup sweet. And bell pepper with coriander for garnish? Why? It could have been well tempered with cumin, mustard other than burnt fenugreek which was thrown everywhere, please do not do that.
Almost all tempered spices were burnt in the rice - namely cardamom and fenugreek.
The food is close to authentic but the sweetness is far too overloaded with sharp repulsion growing gradually to the palette. Moreover the vegan tiffin could be balanced if 2 tiffins are dry and 2 are wet. Otherwise it's overwhelmingly 3 loads of curry with one part rice. A balance I think might be appropriate or probably as an option would be very nice.
Quite disappointed about the size of the Roti tho. It's quite close to authentic Rajasthani roti.
Just that if there were more waiters it would have been nice. It was quite a busy night...
Read moreVery noisy. Seating extremely uncomfortable we were not offered a choice to sit on a plank supended by rope or a real chair (preferred). Food was tasty, small portions and cold to luke warn. If this the standard then don't bother. We were in and out before we had a chance for a dinning experience in fact mcdonalds are more honest in proving fast food.
It's all very well being sorry for poor service/food quality but will Mowgli do something about - I suspect not.
Mowgli say they would have done something about the seating - the staff could have mentioned that but did not. The food being cold could easily be remedied by putting a microwave at each table - if they cannot be bothered to get it off pass more quickly - this attitude is symptomatic of this societies' give us your money and go way attitude - well Mowgli will not be getting any more of ours. Why am I taking this attitude - simply because of the Owner's (Mowgli's that is) response - which is appalling to say the least. here is their response ... Response from the owner an hour ago Thank you for visiting us at Mowgli Edinburgh and for taking the time to get in touch with your feedback. I’m sorry to hear how disappointed you were with this recent experience.
"We are sorry to hear how uncomfortable you found the swing seats, we do appreciate they are not to everyone's taste and we would always encourage guests to let us know if they would prefer not to sit on them at the time of booking or upon entering the restaurant and our teams will always try their best to accommodate this.
We are sorry it wasn’t the excellent experience we always strive to deliver. Hopefully we will have an opportunity to turn this around in the future." They did not even begin to address the issues raised no...
