stopped by to watch the scotland game as the signs outside said they'd be showing it. security outside was a gem and got me extra stools for the family and assured us the big screen would turned on around 30 mins before kick off. had the largest screen on rose street to watch it too, but it was turned off. cut to 5 minutes before kick off and the two bar staff still hadn't turned on the game and were struggling to log onto the computer to get past the login screen ((by the way, might want to rethink the cyber security- "blackrose" is not a strong password for a bar's own pc)). they even roped the poor wee chef into setting up the game who told us he was meant to be tending to four orders in the kitchen, but had been dragged out to help. they finally get the game on but had no audio, completely missing the national anthem while bar staff scrambled to try and get the speakers to work. it's totally fine to dislike the sport, but if you're working somewhere that's advertising to show it; just get properly prepared and carry out your work. i've worked in bars where i wasn't happy about what was being shown too, but a job is a job. bar staff complained about having to switch off music, loudly complained about customers, and were just overall very unprofessional. it's a shame; it's a cool bar with a great scene, but definitely cannot recommend going.

The Black Rose Tavern was my first food experience in Edinburgh and it did not disappoint! Designed as an alternative/rock/gothic pub, it offers a fun and inclusive experience. The staff here are incredibly friendly, especially to tourists. They helped me with the best Scottish lager to drink and also gave me a free glass of Irn Bru to really get an authentic Scottish vibe! The food here was fantastic. I tried Haggis Balls as a starter, which was my first time trying Haggis. They were cooked well and I quite enjoyed them! For anyone curious, they taste something like between corned beef and a pork sausage roll. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating here, I recommend the visit as the surrounding area is wonderful.

It's a good place to have a beer. The interior is nicely decorated and the atmosphere seems to be quite pleasant. They have a few tables outside in a beautiful setting, but outside there is a persistent noise that spoils your peace and the pleasure of sitting with a beer in the fresh air. I don't know if it's like this permanently, or only when I went. The staff members are kind and nice.

Lovely atmosphere and great drinks but we had been charged a tenner for a soggy (definitely microwaved) plain vegan burger, served as is on a plain warburtons type dry bun. the chef visibly bad mouthed to the bartender about me and stormed off when I took the food back (when I was extremely nervous about doing so and apologetic and just trying to explain it was utterly inedible/worse quality than wetherspoons) and only one member of staff (who was wonderful) seemed to care about the fact that I'd been made a fool of not only in general but infront  of other customers. I had to bring up the word refund to get anywhere. The chef's excuse was that "its vegan, it's not gonna taste good" which frustrated me the most. I'm vegetarian and that was the only option for non meat eaters burger wise or really in general. There's so many things you can do to make vegan food taste good, and if you can't make decent vegan food, don't charge a tenner for it or have it on the menu and do not leave customers feeling the way I did when I left. Overall, a very nasty environment to be in, especially if you're not local which I believe contributed to the childish and...

Popped in on a Friday evening. Turns out it was karaoke night - all I can say is that I have no idea how a bar can afford to have karaoke like this which drives away customers. The bar was so empty about an hour after karaoke. We stayed, of course, for the pure entertainment of it all.

At one point a blonde long haired male barman decided to get on the karaoke, meanwhile there’s customers waiting to be served. He bumps in to a customer, the customer apologises and the blonde guy says something to the effect of “aye I’ll be bumping back in to yi when I throw yi oot ma pub” - now THAT’s the customer service we all want.

After his outburst, The male blonde long haired barman with glasses proceeds to burst into song, a metal track, and I’m sure he hit puberty right there and then. His voice dropped, making him sound like a seagull, and was swiftly followed by some vague attempt at metal screaming. All the while, everyone just staring in amusement. It felt like an episode of Phoenix Nights.

Good pint eh Guinness. Good levels of cringe. Everyone of the staff seem sound, apart from the male...
