Quick lunch - overall ok but far from great. Some cringe customer service. 7 of us went in for a midweek lunch. Opting for sandwich type dishes, the food was ok, but not special and I would say it was average. Baby change facilities were dirty and not a pleasant experience. Whilst our service was ok, I happened to overhear some cringeworthy customer service as I sat on the upper floor eating my lunch. 2 people wanted to join a friend who was eating alone - basically told to go downstairs and could not join her just for drinks. There was plenty of free space, overhead something to do with the way the bill is applied to the table?! 2 other guys came in to eat, kind of selected a table themselves but were basically pushed to another table that the waitress felt more suitable. Why I am not sure given the relatively small size of the upstairs.

Rose Street Brewery is the second Nicholson’s Gin and Ale Establishment we’ve enjoyed in as many days. Our server, Claire, was lovely and provided warm and friendly service. My husband had the stovies which he thought were excellent, and while not a traditional item, the macaroni and cheese was also wonderful. The fish platter is a food option for two with some items served on bread with a specialty sauce. The fried pieces were excellent but we would have preferred the sauce on the side of the shrimp and smoked salmon. The dining room upstairs isn’t large and 2 seat tables are small but it afforded us an opportunity to have a warm and friendly chat with a couple from Aberdeen seated next to us and share travel stories.

Sadly, not a family friendly bar. Was told that our children are not allowed in the bar unless they are consuming food. The bar stated that due to licencing laws as well as the discretion of the management, they must be consuming food on the premises to remain in the bar, which legally is not the case. For a child to enter a bar in Scotland, a pub needs to have a special childrens license to allow kids in. But children do not need to consume food to be allowed to enter a bar in Scotland. The bar itself was clean, tidy and well laid out and the bar staff were attentive. Just unfortunate that in Scotland, in some cases some bars are so behind mainland Europe in it's approach to having children in a bar.

Very rude service!

I popped in last night for a quiet drink and when I ordered drinks for my friends and I was immediately met with contempt from a rather hostile man (I refuse to refer to this individual as ‘gentleman’). He was on the elderly side so I assume the manager. I don’t have the energy or inclination to write up a detailed account. To summarise, there were some issues with my order in that they did not have some particular drinks. Instead of offering suggestions on alternatives, the response was just “don’t have that” in a rude manner. As a publication, there are some key competencies you should possess. One is being hospitable (clue’s in the name!), one is having a knowledge of beverages! The whole conversation with this man was extremely unpleasant.

At this point a very friendly lady popped over, interjected and did actually offer me an alternative. She clearly seen me struggling and did a great job of the handling my order.

I despair at this. Hospitality has suffered so much over the past year and a half. Things are now looking positive so you would think these business owners/managers would be grateful and making at least some effort. Businesses like this deserve to have closed down. I’ve seen so many great establishments close that did deserve to stay open. Very...

Great bar downstairs. Restaurant upstairs is lovely. Food I ordered was not nice. Complained and sent it back. Don't know what the bartender said to his manager but next thing I knew there was an angry aggressive man looming over me. I had asked for my meal to be taken off the bill. He accused me of eating meal then complaining which I had not. I had taken two maybe 3 bites of it and couldn't eat it as it was making me feel nauseous. Meat was incredibly fatty, seasoning was very unpleasant. Veg was overcooked and soggy, seasoning wasn't nice. I ordered stovies and the soup I had as a starter was thicker than the stovies. Have never had that experience before was genuinely taken aback by it. He was incredibly defensive, wouldn't listen, and his body language, tone of voice and general demeanour was aggressive. I have no doubt that no matter what I say he will come up with some form of excuse. Shame because up till that point my friend and I (she very much enjoyed her food) had enjoyed...

Weve been in the British isles for 2 weeks, travelling all over Ireland & Scotland. Edinburgh has been my favourite spot & has never missed a beat in terms of food, service & fun. Rose St Brewery is no exception for our last night in Scotland. Chloe attended to us straight away to be seated & with drinks. The poor darlin’ you could see running around like a headless chicken, working herself to the bone while her & the two other girls worked to get the packed restaurant served & out the door in a remarkably quick time frame. The food was absolutely excellent, hit the spot with the garlic chicken & balmoral chicken, with very little wait. I hope management is able to get a few more staff though because as great as they all worked, it was extremely busy & the rest of the festival days will be very hard on them, so them having proper support to ensure breaks are taken & minimising burn out is important. Great work commended to this team for their first night of...
