Popped in with the wife who’s recently had bariatric surgery and asked for an adults haddock and chips for £16 and a kids fish and chips for the wife (about £11) and explained that she has a stomach about the size of a golf ball. Got the usual can’t sell an adult a kids meal policy! But can have an oap meal for an extra which is only 75p more, despite my wife obviously not being an oap. Laughable. Felt sorry for the member of staff who felt uncomfortable, to be fair she was as friendly as she could be. I was surprised by this attitude from Bob Carvers, a traditional shop in my home town of Hull for decades. It wasn’t as if the place was full either. So we took our £40 somewhere else and won’t be going back, like many other customers on here. Bob Carvers, get your act together.
UPDATE following response.
This wasn’t about money it’s about a ridiculous nonsensical policy. Furthermore there was no “pick and mix” option offered or available at all.
In any case, your position is to serve your customers what they ask for. If a small portion is what’s required then give them what they want. We wasn’t asking for money off or any discounts at all.
I explained to your waitress that even a kids meal would have only been half eaten. We’re not free-loaders or trying to get freebies. Furthermore my wife dosent have a condition. She’s had surgery to reduce the amount she eats. You could have accepted this and just supplied a small kids sized plate of fish and chips for crying out loud.
Gesture of good will oap meal? Then why not offer the meal requested as a gesture of good will. These upselling policies really stink of profiteering.
Do you refuse to sell a kid an adults meal?
Get a grip of yourselves. There’s absolutely no need to be extorting extra money out of people in order for the left overs to be thrown in a bin.

Fish was decidedly watery and batter fairly tasteless but the actual fish was quite nice big flakes.
Really bad was receiving two very very dirty spoons with the drinks, which while mistakes happen, it was so obvious it shouldn't have
Didn't get anywhere near enough milk and tomato sauce wasn't available as standard and when supplied wasn't really enough for two meals.
Restaurant was pretty clean but dismal. Minimal decoration other than of photos relating to the business.
Service was brusk without much cheer but just about attentive enough.
For near £20 for the two meals I would expect a lot better. Best fish and chips in Hull? Hate to see the worst if...
Read moreOur last visit here was terrible. Ordered fish and chips and asked for some tarter sauce when I opened the sachet and put on the food it was green I checked the date and it said 2021! I shouted the waitress over and she took the sachet off me and went to talk to the fryer and then came back and said its just a best before date 🤣🤣 I told her but 2021 is a bit bad! At this point the fryer came out and offered to change the chips so I thought fair I was happy for her to do that but I ended up leaving majority of the meal as it just wasn't nice. When I got home I didn't feel right and spent the early hours and the next day on the toilet. I most definitely won't...
