Earlier on today my wife and l had spot if tea and pot if coffee in Whitby at Marie Antoinette' cafe. Whilst there we noticed there afternoon teas. Lashings of plump sandwiches in white and brown bread. Large slices of gateau and scones. Looked luscious. £16.75 for two. Later the same afternoon attended our booking at Botham's. The cream teas arrived. Each person received two slices of supermarket white bread cut into small squares. These were filled, this is a misnomer, with one small piece of ham, small piece of cucumber skin on and some watery egg mayonnaise. A scone with butter and carton of clotted cream. In addition 4 small fancies. My wife does not like tea so asked for coffee instead. To say we were disappointed is the understatement of all time. In particular the two pieces of bread would not have been out of place as a joke. Total waste of money. £14.50 per person, daylight robbery. Look for somewhere else. Where l raised my thoughts with serving staff l was told " we only work here" When the bill arrivef l noticed a surcharge of 25p for the coffee. When asked why you can guess what answer l received ! I accept it is afternoon "tea" but if Marie Antoinette cafe can and Betty's can do it for same price l wonder why Botham's cannot. Daylight robbery springs to mind. BE WARNED, GO...
Read moreAn unfortunate first experience at Botham's Tearooms to celebrate my mother's birthday. We preordered the Botham's afternoon tea via telephone days prior. The afternoon tea that was discussed to us was mistakenly The Yorkshire afternoon tea. This caused slight confusion. Nonetheless we waited, and waited and 40 minutes had passed before we eventually received our order. I was accompanied by my two young boys and as you can imagine they lack any sort of patience. The afternoon tea itself was delicious however we had drank our pot of tea before it had even arrived. There was also a very large queue of elderly customers that wished to be seated. I'd suggest in future that tables are on a prebook basis. I'd like to enjoy my food without feeling pressured or bombarded by the sheer magnitude of customers. Finally, on receipt of our bill I noticed that the prices did not correlate to those on their website menu. We were charged £15.25 per person and not £14.95 as shown on the website. I was told that they would not honor the price stated online. This will need to be updated. To conclude, the Tearooms were not well managed and sadly I will not be returning. It was not the experience we'd...
Read moreI love Elizabeth Botham’s We often holiday around the North Yorkshire moors as walking is a main leisure activity for us. Can’t remember a visit when we didn’t visit them in Whitby or at their lovely smaller, but superb, tearooms in Pickering. Both offer superb fare with the friendliest service imaginable. So, often order one of their hampers online for presents for family and friends and the feedback is amazingly good. Their ginger Yorkshire Brack is our favourite along with their plum bread. But their are many others we love. Have managed to educate some southerners ( and East Europeans ) to eat a slice of Wensleydale with the fruited cakes. They thought it was crazy until they tried it and reversed their opinions. Botham’s is always an amazing taste of home to a proud but “expat” Yorkshireman. I think heaven may be a Botham’s tearoom at Headingly, overlooking...
