Crown Bar & Grill — Restaurant in England

We visited Thd Crown Bar and Grill on Sunday 06 August 2023 for a drink, having spotted its entry in the Camra Good Beer Guide. We navigated ourselves to a nearby pay and display car park to the rear. We then approached via an alleyway into a side door . The Grill area ( restaurant) was fairly quiet but we walked through it to get a drink in the bar area.

A group were sitting on a high level table quietly watching a football match on large screen TV but it was not interfering with other drinkers . The furniture in the bar is very comfortable with upholstered chairs with arms at all the tables.

The bar had three real ales on with a fourth clip turned round . I had an interesting Tiny Rebel Under the Sun ( Hazy Citra ale) after first trying a sample . The bar staff were busy but only a short wait was needed before getting served . The staff were helpful and gave advice about the free WiFi available when spotting my tablet .

Beautiful old building and excellent place to stay, staff couldn't be any more attentive to customer needs, clean, tidy and fit for purpose. Room rates extremely competitive for an establishment at the centre of town, easy access to all local amenities. The building is hundreds of years old, it has been sympathetical modernised / retro fitted to keep it up to date with today's needs, I found the stairs to reach the first floor quite amusing, not sure if it's an optical illusion (unlikely) but they obviously didn't use a spirit level or set square back in the day, I don't know what provision is in place to assist anybody with mobility issues staying overnight but I would definitely enquire prior to booking a room but accessible down stairs entrances for anyone wishing to stop for a well cooked enjoyable meal at a reasonable price point. Great food as always but service was unusually poor, in particular getting drinks with our meals, hence the one star for the bar staff, one female of whom was actually unhelpful, bordering on rude and never returned to discuss our problem as she said she would. The waiting staff I would give 3 stars only because although they had to walk past us to deliver every meal and return crockery, they never once noticed all night when our glasses were empty. The acoustics are not good at all, especially if you are in one of the tables near the kitchen / on a thoroughfare to or from it. If the rest of the experience were up to the food quality it would be worth every penny, as it is far from cheap. Sadly they are not...
