Let's get straight to the point, The Wainwright Pub is NOT the second best pub in Cumbria, or even Keswick. It may have a wide selection of beers and ales but the establishment and service have a long way to go. We booked a table for last night at 7.30pm. We arrived 10 minutes early and waited for the table to become free. The Customers left but we were not told we could be seated, when we asked we were told the table was going to be wiped down for us first. This was done and again we waited to be seated. Nothing happened so we sat down anyway. We waited for a few minutes then my partner approached the bar in search of menus. He was met with a rude barman telling him he couldn't order food where he was and needed to move round to the other side of the bar. My partner explained he wasn't there to order as we didn't have menus yet. When we were ready, another more friendly barman took our order. He explained to us that there could be a 25/30minute wait as lots of people had ordered food and a wide range from the menu available. WE WAITED 1 HOUR 15 MINUTES for our food to arrive. Absolutely ridiculous. No one came to apologise for the delay. After 45 minutes waiting we asked the barman who had taken our order how much longer we had to wait, he said he would check and came back to inform us that realistically we were looking at another 10 to 20 minutes. We waited a further 30 minutes! To be fair the food was tasty pub food when it finally arrived, but certainly not worth the wait. There are lots of pubs to choose from in Keswick, my advice would be to find...
Read moreI am spending a few days in Keswick for a walking holiday and I decided to check this place out for an evening meal. I am pleased to say that I had the best steak I have had in a long time. Whilst I sat and ate my meal the couple on the next table were saying that it is only like spoons food, which I think is unfair. The food in Wetherspoons is pre-cooked and reheated, so there is no skill involved in heating it up. Here at the Wainwright on the other hand the chef has taken their time and shown care and consideration for the customer. It has taken skill and judgement and timing to ensure that the food is correctly cooked and the effort that has gone into making it should never be judged as the same as spoons. I experienced great service and a friendly atmosphere tonight and I am personally very pleased that I chose to eat here. As for the condescending and controlling nature of the bigot on the table next to me, he should be...
Read moreMy wife and I have visited this pub every year we have visited Keswick over the last 15+ years however after the experience we had there earlier this evening we have decided that we will never set foot in this pub ever again, The manager was extremely rude and off-hand in dealing with my wife's complaint about the glass of wine she had been served and refused to replace it from a fresh bottle. He also could not even be bothered to taste the wine from the bottle which my wife had been served from and simply dismissed her complaint as being a problem with her taste buds. His attitude appeared to be bordering on the misogynistic. As my wife is very knowledgeable about wines and has been drinking wines for over 40 years, she knows perfectly well when a bottle of wine has gone off or is way...
