I am really reluctant to write this review as this restaurant is a hidden gem. It was recommended to us by friends and when I called to book there was limited time slots available, I definitely recommend booking early to get a table.
When we arrived we were a little concerned that we were in the right place, as there way in isn't well signposted but you can't get really lost. Walking into The Lantern really is like stepping into the past, we were seated in the bar area and someone took our drinks order and we were given a menu to peruse before our drinks arrived and we were asked if we were ready to order. We were left to enjoy our drinks in the bar area whilst our order was prepared. All around this seating area are photos of Whitefriargate throughout the years which is really interesting, especially seeing the old shops and what it was like before it became pedestrianised.
When our food was ready we were shown to our table. We ordered a garlic bread starter to share and for our main course we ordered a sirloin steak and a porterhouse steak with fries, onion rings and cauliflower cheese as sides. We also ordered the garlic mushroom starter to come with our main course.
The food was some of the most delicious food that I have eaten in a very long time. The steaks were cooked to perfection and melted in our mouths. The garlic mushrooms were the best I have ever tasted, all of the food was amazing. We were given the tip of sharing the sides because they are quite big portions and I am glad we did share because we couldn't eat dessert. These photos don't do the food the justice it deserves.
The service at The Lantern was fabulous, the staff are so friendly, kind, patient and helpful. They really made the evening for us.
My only criticism of The Lantern would be that we were cold . Our booking was for 6.30pm and I can imagine that as there is more people in the restaurant it will warm up, but take a jumper just in case. It certainly won't put us off...
Read moreHad been so looking forward to this resturant & the raved about Garlic Musrooms.....sadly they were the worst I have ever encountered, totally overwhelmed by Worchester sauce (i think, well thats what it tasted like) as was the Tornados Rossi sauce?.... not nice at all, shame as most of the meal was cooked well but ruined.... can only think chefs hand slipped? But wouldnt she taste either sauce? If so......why serve it? The mushrooms & steaks themslves were cooked well as was the red snapper, asaragus & onion rings so this chef can cook. My meal was totally Ruined, the night spoiled. I raised this with the waitress & she said she'd taken the Tornados off the the bill but on checking later it appears not - the bill was £120 for 2 of us this included a bottle of wine (nice) but unacceptable as to add injury to insult, I suffered the rest of the evening/night with indigestion & abdominal upset.
In reply to the owner: Thank you for your responce, however at no stage did I suggest you alter a long held recipe? I certainly do not believe this was as the sauce would normally taste as if other customers had the unpleasant experiance of both the dishes (being over whelming worcstershire sauce....vinigary) then i shouldn't think you would have any good reviews. .....perhaps it had gone off? If you re-read the review I stated 'can only think chefs hand slipped' my review was fair giving credit where it was due, Regardless the meal was mared due to the awfull sauce, I was looking forward to Rossini not garlic steak. Do appreciate you informing me it wasnt a one off, that's how you mean do it.....Really?? We will try Cognac...
Read moreWe visited the Lantern restaurant on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago and had a fantastic meal and wonderful experience. We loved the original decor the Lantern boasts and we found out that it has been in the same family for nearly 60 years! The way in which guests are welcomed and the pride and care taken in the food served, you can really tell it's a family-run establishment. For our meal, we opted to start with the calamari and garlic mushrooms. Both of these were delicious, but we loved the mushrooms so much we had to order another portion! We then had a Porterhouse steak each, which were cooked to perfection. Alongside these we ordered the fries, onion rings and pepper sauce, which for us, were the ideal accompaniments. After these first two courses we were too full to try any of the desserts, but we imagine the options are just as tasty as everything else on the menu. Despite it being a very busy night, we couldn't fault the service we received. The servers were very attentive and ensured we were well looked after all evening - they really made us feel at home. We can't recommend the Lantern enough. Everyone should experience this hidden gem at least once. We'll certainly be back when we're next...
