Saw a large bookcase in the window, went in to ask and was told it was sold. However, I was told by the owner that someone had placed a deposit on it but hadn't paid the balance. I was also told that if they hadn't paid in full in a fortnights time, I could buy it. In the intervening 2 weeks I revisited twice to take measurements and made it clear I was still interested. The person working there said the owner would be there on the day I was told 2 weeks from when I originally asked. I was also told that they might not be able to deliver as it was too big. I contacted a man and van in anticipation of picking the item up as the people with the deposit hadn't settled and the deadline was approaching. I attended on the arranged date, when the owner was present, and was told that he had sold it to someone else that morning. I was also told by him that he was fed up with being messed around and he had done me a favour as it was very heavy and I would need a van. I certainly never messed him about whatsoever, he in fact had messed me about. I took him at his word, which proved a naive mistake on my part and not one I intend to repeat.
