On arrival we were told that breakfast was served between 9am and 9.30am. We queried this as it seemed late, but the member of staff confirmed it twice. We came down for breakfast the following morning at 9.15am, but were told bluntly that we'd missed breakfast (which was apparently served at 8.45am), and that our breakfast was in the bin. There was no apology, or offer of a cup of tea, toast or anything else. We were told that there was no way we could have been told the wrong time for breakfast, since it had been the same for years. We asked whether we could have a partial refund; the manager said she'd check with the colleague who had checked us in.
The next morning the chef didn't arrive so breakfast was half an hour late. We also asked whether we could have the refund we'd discussed, but we were told point blank that we must have got the time wrong and that we were accusing the staff of lying. Eventually, and very reluctantly, the manager offered us £10 - but then told us to 'go to our room'... I've honestly never been spoken to so rudely in a hotel or restaurant. On leaving we asked again about the refund - which apparently will appear on the card we paid with. I look forward to receiving that.
It's a real shame that we experience such incredible rudeness, as the B&B is basically perfectly fine. It's a little tired and worn, and the road noise is a bit loud overnight, but it's very well located, had free wi-fi and free parking, and seemed good value. I don't know whether the way we were treated was unusual - the other comments here suggest possibly so - but it was so unbelievable as to ruin an otherwise perfectly fine stay (and to motivate me to leave...
Read moreJust spent a few days visiting York. Stayed at the Bay Horse, a little pub come b&b just outside Micklegate. The room was okay. Had contacted them before I booked to make sure they catered for vegans. Was told yes..... Breakfast day 1.... I asked for any milk but cows, sorry none available, so no coffee for me👎 Margarine? Sorry none available, so I also left the toast,as it hard going dry. A 'cooked' breakfast arrived, 2 Quorn sausages, undercooked (as in photo) 2x mushrooms, 2x tomatoes, undercooked, both items covered in pepper, a small dish of beans, and an egg, I was not impressed! Scraped the egg off and gave it to my dog... Tried for fruit, mango was overripe, inedible. I left hungry!
Day 2.... Asked for oatmilk, AGAIN, was told I hadn't asked for it! Was offered yoghurt 🤮,I politely declined and explained that vegans don't eat it. The waitress then decided to tell me how she's 'nearly' vegan and only eats chicken and fish. I didn't ask for her story, I politely said fish and chicken are animals, and vegans, me incuded, don't eat ANIMALS! Margarine was made available for my toast. I don't really eat baked beans but would have been hungry had I not.
Across the road, a Sainsbury's local, plenty vegan items for sale, they knew I was coming 2 months ago, so no excuse!
Found a little cafe called Partisan and had cake and coffee, at 9.30 am both days, tasted great, and I would highly recommend! Staff were really pleased to...
Read moreExcellent little family owned pub B&B, ran by Heather & Lorna, mum & daughter along with staff. My wife and self had a four days/three nights midweek break, late March 2022 and the sun shone warmly for us. What a cracking pub B&B. Private pub car park at back. We had a large double room with large bathroom, loadsa space with brewing up kit too. Breakfast comes as part of the deal. Plenty of cereals, fruit and juice along with DIY toast. The full English breakfast is great, order is taken at the table, so up to the individual as to what and how much and as much tea or coffee as you like. It really sets you up for the day. Then sit outside and enjoy their pleasant pub yard/garden to finish your tea and read the papers, or not. The Bay Horse is in a great location, just 260 metres from the town wall with a bus stop almost directly opposite to go into the heart of the city. The bus services are so frequent, we didn't wait more than five minutes for a bus, it's not worth using the car as traffic and parking can be horrendous. Being York, there are plenty of pubs and eateries, the same applies to the vicinity of The Bay Horse. So, a big thank you to Heather & Lorna. Also to chief cook, Heather (another one) and Raya who waited on for us, a big thank you too. You all made our stay so pleasant and memorable. We'll be back! Just remember, when you do visit. It is a pub B&B, if you go bed early, you will here...
