The Breakwater Bistro is an absolute gem of British dining. The fish arrives encased in a light, golden batter—crisp, delicate, and utterly flawless—enveloping the freshest, most flavourful fillet one could hope for. Each bite is a masterclass in balance: a whisper of the sea, encased in perfection. The chips, too, are a triumph: beautifully crisp on the outside, fluffy within, and seasoned with just the right touch.
Service here is exemplary—warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional. My partner and I travelled over 200 miles for what we had been promised was the finest fish and chips in the United Kingdom, and The Breakwater Bistro did not disappoint. Indeed, it exceeded all expectations.
And then came dessert, which elevated the experience even further. The waffles were warm, soft, and gently crisp at the edges, a perfect canvas for indulgence. I savoured the Terry’s Chocolate Orange creation—an exquisite balance of rich cocoa and zesty citrus—while my partner delighted in the Strawberry Meringue, a symphony of airy crunch, ripe fruit, and silky cream. Both were exemplary, executed with finesse and presented with an elegance that transformed classic comfort into culinary artistry.
A true delight from start to finish, and unquestionably worthy of every mile travelled. The Breakwater Bistro is highly recommended to anyone in pursuit of the very best Britain...
Read moreBeware, this place has gone seriously downhill..! I’ve eaten there numerous times over the years, and the great views remain, of course, but the rest of the experience was sadly lacking. Went there for lunch yesterday, lovely sunny day, expecting it to be busy, but only 2 tables occupied upstairs, out of 20-odd. It soon became clear why. No printed menus on offer, so had to follow other diners and take photo of wall menu back to table. Then it’s back downstairs to order and pay, even though there were 3 staff members standing around with apparently nothing much to do. And their prices have gone silly - £11 for a small piece of battered cod, then £3 extra for chips, then another £1.50 for peas..!! So a very ordinary fish and chips comes to £15.50 - much worse value than in recent years. Then it’s find your own cutlery (not very well washed), and gather condiments in those awful little sachets which, once emptied, blow all over the balcony in the slightest breeze. The food came on awful, flimsy, cardboard plates, and the drinks in the flimsiest of plastic cups, the sides of which cave in as you pick them up to drink. And to add insult to injury, we found we had been charged 40p for 2 “glasses” of tap water..! Is that even legal..? Needless to say, we shan’t be returning, at least not until someone gets hold of the place and restores it to its...
Read moreVery disappointed on this visit to the Breakwater, pity I cannot give minus stars.
Location is very good with friendly staff. Really looking forward to fish and chips but asbtge fryer was broken I decided on grilled haddock with potatoes in a cream sauce, very tasty although very small portion.
When the meal arrived I was surprised to see the potatoes in their own small dish and two 3inch long pieces of haddock about 2 inches wide grilled!! ( thinking back there were no grill marks so it could have been microwaved), there was no herbs or seasoning on the fish with the only garnish being s sprig of parsley.
For £13 and in a restaurant of this reputation I would have expected a nice salad garnish to brighten up the presentation and make the meal appetising. I should have sent it back but as my wife was treating me I did not wish to embarrass her.
I have sent a email to the restuarant and eventually received a response indicating that the manager wished to talk to the staff working at the time of our visit. CANNOT SEE WHY, as the food preparation and presentation us down to the chef and management not the waitress. Why do some English restaurant not just bite the bullet when they make a error and apologise.
We have lots of friends in Brixham who have used the Breakwater a lot and are not happy at...
