Hey? So I’m a bit of a food person and the way that you get treated very often can make the food taste better (If you know what I mean) 😖😖😖 This restaurant???? No. Terrible. Terrible. TERRIBLE! So at first I liked the whole “front Room house look” It usually means homemade cooking!!!! NO.
I made a special trip down from Wales And my best friends who live here wanted to take me somewhere different…and new. Oh dear. 😖😖😖 It all started out great…I asked the waiters name… He was lovely ( only good thing about this place) Anish.
We waited over an hour for the main dishes. Now, there’s not a lot of menu choice (be warned) not a bad thing as such …. however, the three of us asked questions about the dishes, two of ours came with a “sauce”? Now, I’m Welsh and I love my curry, CURRY??? There wasn’t any on two dishes??? Meat. No sauce. I ordered a spicy dish, £18! Just the dish, no sauce. DRY!!!!!!So my friend asked for extra sauce and said it was dry. They brought coconut sauce. So I added some although my dish was tomato based and I’m not a fan of mild coconut tastes. Just to get some juice on the dish ! The rice side dish was a packet of boiled microwave rice and u could see the veg in the dish was that cubed, bagged veg that comes frozen… no oils or spices? £6 !!!! No fresh veg??? Horrible. Then my friends asked where the “noodles” were? They brought them after the meal… dry and u could lift them with ur fingers!? !!!!!! and I gotta be honest I’ve had juicier Supernoodles! You have to see the photos to believe it? £4 for dry super noodles??? Now I left 3/4 of my dinner my other friends ate theirs and also complained but I had explained the food was awful… the waiter has arguing with me demanding that I just didn’t like it ?!!?? I left most of it and he was obnoxious and wouldn’t listen to our comments…. Refusing to hear why I had left most of my food. This wasn’t Anish. I never got the name of the guy who took over our order. He wasn’t nice. So we sat with the dishes there for 20 mins. My friends both like a quiet life and they did complain, bit ate the food but I hadn’t eaten most of mine so I didn’t wanna pay? The waiter demanded we Pay and said he would take the white dry Supernoodles off the bill as they came AFTER a the meal ( I’m sorry Supernoodles) you are better than this?!) I believe legally if you haven’t eaten the food in a restaurant, even if it’s unpalatable, you should’nt pay for it. I never ate most of it didn’t enjoy it. I did love the taste that was there….but there was no sauce on the plate like it said on the menu? My 2 friends paid the whole bill as the waiter was beginning to make them feel humiliated and embarrassed. They shouldn’t have to do that for me but I didn’t want the night to be even more...
Read moreI had dinner at the White Pepper this week. I didn't really know what to expect, but I guess I assumed it would be an Indian food based restaurant similar to the many other Indian Restaurants I've been to - I'm a big fan of Indian food and very spicy food in general. I was in no way disappointed, but The White Pepper was not at all what I'd expected.
In many ways I'd put service ahead of food in terms of what I like when visiting a restaurant and what will make me go back. The service was excellent - the staff were very attentive and engaging, without being overbearing. It's clear they are trying something new in culinary terms - I different twist on Indian cuisine that is not (yet) familiar to the English palate - and they are doing what they can to help with food selection and an understanding of what's being served. All of my questions on what the various options on the menu were were answered and thoughtful suggestions were made to guide my choices. There's non of the standard "Buna, Madras, Vindaloo" options to be see and not a Naan bread to be had, but what is there (at least what I tried) was phenomenal.
I marked "Atmosphere" down by a star simply because (like most restaurants now it seems...) the place was not full and I think it should be. It's a new idea, so that may take time, but I'd encourage anyone who enjoys grown up Asian food to give it a go. In the interest of making this a useful review, I do think that this restaurant is likely more for grown ups than I'd usually think of for your standard Indian food restaurant. What I mean by that is that the White Pepper seems to use only the most flavourful cuts of meat (e.g. chicken thighs rather than breast meat) and that has a different taste and texture that may not be to the liking of your kids - there's no "kids menu" that I saw. This is a place for date night or an adult group meal in my opinion and not likely a young family venue.
I'll be going there again - lots more on the...
Read moreWe recently ordered 8 items, but unfortunately, the portion sizes were very small. In addition, we had to wait for almost an hour before receiving the starter, which was quite disappointing. We ordered Thalassery Dum Biryani but were served a different biryani instead. While we appreciate that this was not added to the bill, we were still dissatisfied with the quantity and value of the other dishes. For example, the Chicken Peralan, priced at £14.99, contained a portion of protein that seemed more suitable for a dish costing £5–£8. Similarly, the White Pepper Chicken Fry, priced at £6.99, was also served in a very small portion. Given the prices, we had expected more generous servings and better value. The service also fell short of expectations. The staff member served the food from behind the table, in a manner that felt careless, even serving over the top of my head. This did not feel appropriate for proper customer service. That said, we would like to mention that the pappadam was excellent and much appreciated. We are sharing this feedback in the hope that it helps improve both the food quality and the service for future customers.
