Telfords not so biggest secret
A cold Friday evening post Christmas celebrations pending and I had a hole in my belly that needed filling. I had a craving for something different to the normal outlets Telford had to offer. However being short on time i needed something quick but substantial to get me through the night ahead. After finally securing a Christmas space for my car on red oak as I opened the door a smell hit me and I knew that ..that was exactly what I needed … but where was it coming from after following my nose I turned up at Urey’s street food kitchen based on red oak car park adjacent to the taxi rank at the southern entrance to Telford Town Centre. Now I have to admit in all my years living in Telford I have never visited Urey’s it’s slipped under the radar for me having only walked past on the commute to work when the kitchen has been closed but boy have I been missing a trick. When open and the burners lit Urey’s kitchen draws you in with the fantastic smells of freshly cooked food and exotic spices and flavors wafting across the car park. What also draws you in is the welcoming smile of Normi the resident head chef and owner of Urey’s kitchen for its (fast approaching) 15 year existence. Normi welcomed me in enquiring what foods i liked and linking them to the vast menu options available. It’s a simple but perfect concept at Urey’s first you choose your protein with eye catching options such as Goat, mutton, Catfish and Cod along with staple favorites beef (sliced or minced), chicken or for the vegans amongst us Tofu, vegan sausage, or quorn. Next up choose your style from Indian, Thai, Caribbean, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, italian or Texan ..you then choose your preferred spice option (catering for everyone’s tastes from the mild to the volcanic hot) and finally you choose your accompanying Carb being either Noodles, Rice, Pasta or Cous Cous . Thinking of the night ahead and upon Chef Nori’s assurance and recommendation I went for Italian bolognese with a slight kick of heat and accompanying pasta. Now me being me I’m picky with my veg but a nice touch with Urey’s is that Normi will list the veg that goes into each dish checking for anything that is not to your palette or allergy requirements for me of course it was the exclusion of red peppers and the inclusion of cheese ..order completed!!!! I headed off to town for 10 mins for a bit of last min Christmas shopping. Upon my return the smell hit me once again and my mouth started salivating at the prospect ahead.. after paying with my preferred method, for me cash is always king with local businesses , (however card payments are also welcome) I sorted my parking payment and headed home. After a 10 min drive the food was still piping hot and ready for the taste test. Wow just Wow i have to say one of the best Bolognese’s I have ever tasted having eaten at Italians all around the uk and even in Italy this was up there and really hit the spot with a standout gooey cheese hit with every mouthful. Urey’s was a massive hit leaving me feeling full and satisfied not like a regular processed chain where you are ready to go again after 20 mins. I guarantee I will be returning to work my way through the menu with my eye on trying a mutton...
