An intimate, family-run restaurant cooking the kind of food that would easily cost you a third or even double more in Londons' Chinatown. Their Peking roast duck and Char siu pork, freshly made on the day, is frankly top tier. Succulent as it gets. And their salt and chilli King Prawns are plump, juicy, tender as you like and crisp as anything - not the bullets we've come to expect in many other establishments. Not oily at all! I came on a semi-busy Sunday afternoon and cannot fault the atmosphere, service from a lovely young lady who had impeccable manners, and the food itself. I've eaten here twice now and am astonished. It's a small yet cosy dining room (good family atmosphere) and an even smaller kitchen with minimal yet obviously skillful kitchen staff, who are clearly putting pure love into doing UK Chinese the right way. When I asked if I could take a few photos of the kitchen they did not hesitate to oblige me. Far cleaner and tidier (spotless in fact) than all those franchise eateries and soulless pubs and bars in the area. A final note from a very satisfied customer: It all comes down to seasoning and My Goodness were those salt and chilli King Prawns well seasoned. Flavour explosion all round. 10/10....
Read moreOK. This is only the 2nd Review that I've ever written. VERY DISAPPOINTED. I started visiting Wings (on the basis of Reviews), a couple of years ago. A friend visits me a couple of times a year, and we like to go out for an authentic Chinese meal. I'm not a regular customer (a couple of times a year). So, we visited this evening. It was my friends birthday. We arrived at 9:15. There was a large party of people (Birthday), and they were about to leave. We were then the only customers. We ordered starters, and were told that all ordered food would come out at the same time!. We asked why - "Because we're cleaning the kitchen" ??? (Don't you do that once you've closed??). We just ordered some main courses. Verdict- Bland; and my friend was not impressed by the Lemon Chicken, which he says was tough: (Under cooked?). It appeared to us that they just wanted to close up asap. It was a pretty miserable experience. We left as soon as we could. Walking about 300 yards, I remembered that I'd left a bag. I ran back. The place was locked and in darkness. When I banged on the door, it was opened, and my back was given to me. "Hope to see you again soon" she said : "I don't think so"...
Read moreWhat a nice little find, you know it's going to be good when the place has roasted duck, roasted pork & crispy pork hanging from the window (sorry vegetarians but that's the only way i can describe it). we didn't know what to eat and not familiar with southend restaurants, we could have easily gone to a kebab, fish and chip shop, or grabbed a burger from one of the stalls, but i jumped on google and this place popped up. didn't read the reviews just saw that someone posted photos and if there's food which looks proper then we will be there. was given the menu and looking through it was a nice surprise, they had dishes which you dont tend to see which is always nice, we ordered the braised beef with rice and won ton noodle soup and grilled dumplings, food arrived and was good, cant fault it as all, the owners were pleasant and the food came out quick. if you manage to come across this place, hopefully you enjoy it as much as we did. highly recommend if you fancy chinese...
