In short: -+ food was decent, but it's a bit too expensive. on top of the listed menu prices is a 10% hidden fee non UK issued cards don't seem to work. wait staff can be forgetful waiting time at the bar drinks is kind of long. atmosphere is cool
It started off great, but then quickly dropped off.
Ordering went smooth and food arrived promptly.
The olive oil is delicious, but the olives were a bit too soft. Overall not too bad.
Afterwards during the main course the food of my party members was great, the lamb was good, albeit butchered a tad poorly (still had bits of waste tendons attached). Figured it was just a different way of butchering at first, but looking back maybe not.
Afterwards we ordered dessert and cocktails, I asked the server a question about one of the whiskys, which wasn't familiar. He didn't know but would ask. Unfortunately we never got an answer. By the time the cocktails arrived I had searched it up online myself (with the very slow Internet connection available there), and ordered it.
This was met with a "oh you do want whisky" remark, which was very surprising, considering this is the same server that would ask one of the bartenders about that whisky for me....
At which point it also took around 10 to 15 minutes to send out the whisky.
Then at the end when we wanted to pay, their card machine seemed to not accept foreign cards / creditcards. We went through multiple cards, all were declined so sent someone out to collect cash... (Unfortunately the directions we received were wrong at first, and then pointed to a "scam" machine with a horrible conversion rate and no receipt)..
Almost seems as If they simply disabled all cards not issued within the UK.... as all cards worked perfectly fine in other shops afterwards, and they didnt appear to be blocked from the bank.
And also turned out they added a "discretionary" 10% tip on top of the food. Kind of a weird way to phrase a mandatory 10% on top, and also weird. No other restaurants in Scotland has done that so far, we were always able to choose our own tip. Furthermore it's mandatory just incorporate it into the price? Very weird to just sprung it on you at the end.
All with all, I cannot recommend it as a tourist. The ambiance was fun, but the overall experience for dinner less so, and the surprises at the end left a...
Read moreI had never tried or really heard much about The Citizen before my visit the other day.
It’s a really fancy looking place, maybe not the type of place you’d visit every week (unless you’re well off) but you won’t break the bank either. For a starter, 2 mains, a pint and a soft drink it came to around £60-65. Which may seem a lot to some people, the quality of food & drink is very much worth it.
I got the haggis stack to start, a decent wee portion of haggis, neeps and tatties, I’d have had this as my main if they done a bigger portion. The two sauces were absolutely incredible I’ll be honest, to the point I was nearly licking my plate.
As for the mains, the steak pie was cooked to perfection, the pastry especially, so soft yet so crispy and went so well with the brilliantly cooked meat and sauce. My girlfriend got the sirloin steak sandwich cooked rare, although I never tried any, I was pretty jealous when I seen it sat down in front of her, it looked great with some nice ciabatta break, melted cheese and caramelised onions.
For Tennents Lager lovers, they do a Tennents Tank Lager, which is delivered straight from the brewery, so it’s not kegged, bottled or canned. I’m not a huge Tennents fan myself but this was really tasty, and went well with a meaty lunch.
We visited on a Wednesday afternoon and it was really quite quiet, so the atmosphere wasn’t great, but if that’s what you prefer then fair enough, it did still feel pretty intimate as the interior is very old fashioned and...
Read moreI have a severe nut allergy and had booked the Christmas lunch menu with friends for a Christmas day out. It wasn't ideal that alot of the set menu had nuts in it. In alot of the dishes it didn't seem required. Does goats need to come with walnuts? Why does a Chocolate Cheescake need Hazelnuts? It was also extremely frustrating that a nut stuffing was used in the Turkey, most people on a christmas day out would pick this and yet if you have a nut allergy you cant. This also wasnt noted on the menu. Neither was the nuts in the oatcakes with the patê I am finding this more and more in restaurants that nuts are being added to dishes for no real reason. It's not a choice to have a nut allergy yet other dietary choices were more than catered for on the menu. It's a shame because the restaurant It's self was lovely and the atmosphere was great for a festive day out. It has put me off returning. It was a the bare minimum to have the dessert removed from the cost as I couldn't actually eat one out of the six options unless it was vanilla ice cream, which is not ideal to have one choice thats nut free out of six. I feel like more could have been done especially since a friend also found a huge bit of plastic in her starter again removed from the bill but really would be expecting that as a bare minimum. It was disappointing and unfortunately I wouldn't return. I was also sent a feedback email and had ticked the option to have a response. Yet to hear back over...
