Finally Liverpool gets authentic, amazing tasting, Cajun food.
I have become somewhat jaded when "down home cooking" is used to grab my attention. Far too often it misses the mark in an attempt to please the locals. That's not the case here!
Hot damn the food is delicious. And I don't mean some of the items . I mean all. Sure the menu isn't huge, but when the gumbo, the jambalaya and OMG don't forget the red beans and rice..... All are winners, boldly naming a combo dish the Holy Trinity is the right thing to do
The restaurant is inside the pub, since the pub doesn't serve food. Long story short. Long time Louisiana native with a special place in his heart for Liverpool, sold his business and came to start something new where he loves to be when abroad. Serendipitous meetings led to ... Hey use my kitchen! And here they are
We are glad to see that!
Need a quick sandwich... The shrimp Po Boy is just right. Want something heartier, then there is the beef Po Boy. Slow smoked beef is just tender and juicy and lip smacking goodness.
As good as that sandwich is.... It's the Red Beans and Rice that rises even higher. Well seasoned, and also using the same smoked to perfection beef, it's thick and tasty and rich. Don't fear the heat. They have opted for a basic mild flavour. There are plenty of hot sauce bottles to be found should you want a healthy kick.
The jambalaya is just so full of flavour and stick to your bones goodness. Reminding me of great family cookouts when I was younger.
The gumbo is meat based with chicken and a homemade sausage for the protein. The flavours are what I expected in a very positive way.... Though I can't wait to try it in seafood form with shrimp or crayfish.
Before we ate the mains.... Well let's talk about the crab dip. Creamy and warm and so fresh. Served with lovely little sliced crusty bread. Heaven.
We kept going. The boudin's were tasty ... Though my partner said a dipper would be nice touch. I pointed at the crab dip and smiled
So if you are wanting some mouth watering food and you are near Mathew Street, cross over the road to Molly Malone for what I hope is not going to be the secret menu. TBF there are loads of signs pointing inside for the food. It is table service, which adds a level of entertainment in a place...
Read moreThe first thing that struck me when we first went in was how friendly the staff were. Instantly the owner greeted us and asked how we found out about the place. He showed us to our table and talked us through the menu. He wasn't overly pushy, but was there to give menu advise when we needed it. The perfect blend of giving us space but also being friendly.
With it being the first proper time trying NOLA food, I ordered lots of different items to try a bit of everything and I'm so glad I did! Everything was super tasty, the Boudin Balls and Shrimp Bread were top highlights and the fried chicken on the mac n cheese was surprisingly some of the best I've had!
If there was any room for improvement, I would say that Gumbo, Jambalaya and the Red beans and rice (The Holy Trinity) could've been hotter. I know other countries don't necessarily always serve food piping hot and because I'd never had this food before, I wasn't sure if that was the case here. But I am splitting hairs at this point because the flavour of those dishes made me care very little about the temperature.
What made this even better is that they are situated in the Molly Malones Irish bar so I could enjoy a decent pint of Guinness with my meal! They also brought over some traditional NOLA beads for us to wear and gave some to our baby to play with too, its the little touches that go a very long way!
I do hope the venue does something to allow a more accessible entrance as it was a bit of a faff carrying our pram up the steps and for wheelchair users its seemingly impossible to visit, but that's not Susu's fault, that's something for Molly Malones to fix!
They've created something special here, and I can't wait to go back and try...
Read moreI came here with my girlfriend as we wanted to try out New Orleans cuisine and it was amazing. I had no idea it was a new place, you would think they've been in business for a long time seeing how professional and welcoming it was.
I would be missing out a crucial part of my review if I didn't mention our waiter Abraham, who was just incredible. He greeted us and sat us down, also called us "lovelies" which I thought was cute. He made us feel very comfortable, gave us an introduction to the kitchen, took the time to go through the menu and explain everything thoroughly. He even took time to tell us his recommendations and favorites along with a funny story.
We got the Large portion of Gumbo, Large portion of Jambalaya and also Mac and cheese. Everything tasted great and we were stuffed after. My favorite was the gumbo; the sausage and chicken and the rice worked amazing together with the spices, it was a great dish.
Not to mention, he gifted us Mardi Gras beads, which was such a nice gesture that I won't forget, it made my experience even more memorable.
It was my last day in England, and what a way to end it. I got to experience food of another culture and learn more about it! I wish I lived closer so I could visit this kitchen more often.
Overall, I'm very impressed with this Susu's New Orleans kitchen and I can't recommend it enough. I wish it the best of the success! You...
