šĀ Stockwell šŗĀ Ā£6.50 Heineken ā¤ļø A superb pub for both drinkers and gastronomes. . The Canton Arms sits on a busy crossroads on South Lambeth Road. The nearest tube is Stockwell which is a seven minute walk. . The pub was built mid 19th century and is tastefully decorated with a green border around the ground floor. Around the front of the pub is a covered outside space, look above the door and windows you will see beautiful Victorian lamps. . The corner entrance takes you in to the front bar which has a good sized servery which is centrally located. Around the walls are deep red wooden panels with odd size mirrors and pump clips of of beers previously served. At the rear of the servery is the dining room which was packed with diners. I liked the fact that there was plenty of space if you just fancied a drink and no knives and forks on every table. . The beer selection was good and included a few cask and craft options. I decided on a Heineken, my pint was great if a little pricey. The big draw at this pub is the food, this pub appears in the recently released Top 50 Gastropubs in the Uk. On the ever changing menu you will find restaurant quality food including, Monkfish, Beef Cheeks and Halibut dishes which were very popular in the busy dining room. This pub is also famous for its Sunday Roasts. . We visited on a Saturday lunchtime and there was a good buzz around the place. We were served by a lovely lady who was very welcoming and all smiles. There was a good mix of punters in from all age groups including local groups and solo imbibers. The soundtrack was an eclectic mix of sixties soul and downtempo chill out. Overall, this pub was easy to settle in to with an upbeat ambience. . I really enjoyed visiting the @cantonarms as it offered the best of both worlds for drinkers and diners alike. The beer choice was good but you will pay a little over the odds. The food is absolute top notch and well celebrated and recognised by the industry. The atmosphere and service were excellent in this welcoming traditional pub. I couldnāt fault this one and 100% recommend a visit here. . ā¹ļø Info correct on...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreUnfortunately had a very poor experience at the Canton arms this evening. I came in with my partner and our 2 children. It was busy, which was lovely to see and they were able to get us a table accomodating for our pram. This was sadly the only good bit of customer service we received. We saw our server (Phoebe) 4 times throughout our dinning experience. First was to take our drinks order, the second time was to place our food order, the 3rd time was to deliver our food, and the 4th time was to pay our bill. When asking for food recommendations there was very little guidance given on the dishes. We ended up ordering 2 portions of the beef cheek rendang (Ā£28), the cuttlefish (Ā£19.80), the whipped feta (Ā£10) and an additional portion of chips (Ā£5) along with our drinks. I would recommend the whipped feta, however the cuttlefish (Phoebe's recommendation) was very much an acquired taste, but happy we gave it a try. The beef cheeks however we found extremely salty to the point that we couldn't eat either portions, leaving me and my eldest daughter to pick away at the extra portion of chips and whipped feta. Sadly our food was never checked back on and our server only found out there was an issue (despite both beef cheek dishes having 70% of the meal left on the plate) when we asked for the bill and we said that we found the beef cheeks to be too salty. The answer we got back was "we don't use salt. We just use spices"
Our bill total came to £145.16 with drinks and service. Our server did apply a discount for the disappointing meal, which she informed us was the best she could do bringing our total to £129.05, which is just the bill removing the service charge.
I guess we caught the Canton arms on a bad evening as as they seem to be a busy venue, however I can not recommend or want to give them another chance as it felt like I just paid £129.05 for a few starters, and some wine. It would have been nice to have a manager check in with us once the complaint about the food had been made, but I guess...
Read moreWe sat at the bar and upon arrival I made an enquiry regarding a bottle of wine that I could see in the fridge . The first member of staff I asked wasn't sure what it was as they were new, he asked his colleague who also wasn't too sure about the wine other than it cost £50. We ordered beer. Speaking of beer they have a very limited and poor selection consisting of mostly macro lagers and Timothy Taylor's Golden best on cask. Surely the only reason for them carrying this beer is that they're tied ? So onto the food, I was recommended the plaice which I promptly ordered and my friend went for the lamb. The starter of burrata was gorgeous, the texture was spot on, firm on the outside and creamy on the inside, not entirely sure about the sliced courgette but I guess it was there to provide a contrast of texture and perhaps a little acidity as it had been gently pickled I believe. The mains took absolutely ages to arrive. I immediately regretted ordering the fish as I remembered how litle meat there is on the bone, it was covered in sauce with peas , samphire and cherry tomatoes. Simple but in no way did it elevate the dish. Thankfully my friend gifted me a piece of his lamb which was beautifully cooked and seasoned. I begrudgingly watched him finish his dish with a look of triumph and glee on his face. The bill came to a total of £71 including service and I couldn't help feeling that it genuinely wasn't worth it. Perhaps if I'd ordered the lamb I would have forgiven them for not being able to sell wine and being perveyors of bland...
