Even though this is a chain and as a Bermondsey Street local for so many years I was also skeptical about it in the beginning, it already became my favourite coffee spot. For me good coffee is so important. It seems like Bermondsey Street is full of cool independent coffee shops, but you know what? Not really. Watch House used to be my favourite. Now it became a âchainâ too and their quality dropped. They still do very good coffee but their prices sky-rocketed so I stopped going there that frequently. There is Fuckoffee, Chapter 72 etc but their coffees are not good quality. Comptoir Gourmandâs pastries are to die for, but again their coffee is mediocre and the utensils (milk jug etc) they use are so worn out that it put me off and I donât buy coffee there anymore.
Back to my original point, even though Gail is a chain, their coffee is very good quality. It also depends on the barista and they seem to be putting a lot of attention and effort to make each latte perfect and visually appealing. Their prices are so much more reasonable compared to other cafes in the street too. Staff so far were always friendly and nice. So it will be my new coffee spot in the street! Hope they keep up with the good standards.
Havenât had chance to try their food yet but everything looks very appealing. During lunch hours it looks very lively inside full of people sitting and...
Read moreI went to pick up some pastries on Sunday morning around 9:45. There was a small queue, but it grew longer due to our waiting time. Two staff members were working at the same till one person was at the coffee machine, and a manager was on her mobile phone, seemingly unaware of the customers waiting. The first customer in line eventually left without making a purchase, and the rest of us were left wondering why no one was attending to us.
After a while, I spoke up, asking if anyone was coming to serve. Immediately after I said this, the manager got off the phone and started helping customers. The young woman at the till approached me with an angry expression and lacked any customer service skills.
Regardless of her name, she needs some training. The first thing she should have done was apologize for the wait, and then be friendly, thanking me and wishing me goodbye. Instead, she appeared angry and unfriendly, and she didnât say anything at all.
Itâs important to remember that if you have a job and receive a salary, itâs because of your customers. I frequently buy from Gail's, but I wonât return to that branch. Instead, Iâll go to Comptoir Bakery in Bermondsey, where the staff is always...

Tucked away on Bermondsey Street, GAILâs Bakery is a quiet, well-located spot thatâs perfect for a relaxed breakfast or a quick coffee break. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the friendly staff add to the charm.
The pastries and baked goods are undeniably deliciousâfresh, flavorful, and well-made. Whether youâre in the mood for a flaky croissant or a hearty loaf, you wonât be disappointed. That said, thereâs room for improvement in the beverages, as the coffee can be a bit hit-or-miss, and portion sizes for some breakfast items (like eggs) feel a little small.
On the plus side, the bakery maintains excellent hygiene standards (5-star food hygiene rating) and is dog-friendly, making it a great stop for both solo visits and casual meetups. With a bit of refinement on the drinks side, this could easily be a five-star spot! Still, a lovely place to visit for a...
