Gigs was my first fish and chips experience in London and it was a disappointing one. My friends and I came in on a Monday afternoon after our first choice for fish and chips was closed. So we decided to come here since it was on my friend's list of food places to try.
On the way in, we saw a few people who were seated outside, eating the fish and chips. It looked very promising - the fish looked like it was fried to golden perfection. Thanks to them, we saw that the portion was huge, so we ended up getting two plates to share amongst four people. We ordered the cod and the haddock. They both tasted pretty similar, but one was slightly less fishy than the other (I believe it was the cod). Overall, there wasn't much flavor to it but luckily, the tartar sauce helped that a little bit. The fish was fried to the perfect consistency but the chips were not. I'm not sure they even fried those because they looked like they were take straight from the freezer.
Would recommend going elsewhere for good fish and chips. But if you want okay fish and bad chips, then...
Read moreGotta be honest here...this is not the fish & chips that I know and love... I ordered take away for this, maybe that was my mistake...? Is the take away all that different from dine-in? The fish is very bland, slightly undercooked, and is chewy... I've never had chewy fish & chips, in all my years of fish & chip eating... The fish batter is also oily, and soggy...Which made the undercooked fries even more soggy.
:( I feel like there is zero excuse for this in London... They salted and added vinegar, but not nearly enough, and they don't provide packets for take away customers to season as they wish. They also didnt provide tartar sauce or a lemon wedge! I know for a fact that there are at least 10 better fish & chip spots in the near-vicinity... I'm really not sure how this place has such a high rating. This dinner (pictured) makes me very sad. I will avoid, and not reccomend, this place...
Read moreThe staff are lovely and very friendly and are always up for a chat so it's 5 stars for customer service. I got a haddock and chips but it was unfortunately fairly tasteless. The chips did not taste like the normal chippy chips and I ended up throwing half the box away, the fish was the nicest thing on the plate but it was still missing something that I could not quite put my finger on.
Another issue is the price - my meal pictured below was £11 which for a small sized fish is way too expensive. I can get a large fish and chips for a couple pounds less at my local chippy and the fish is almost twice the size!
All in all Gigs serves an average fish and chips and is fairly expensive for what you get, but they do serve other things like burgers and kebabs which they might excel at (will let you know if I...
