I have taken it upon myself to try every dessert available at my favourite cafe place; so here is a ranking + description of every sweet thing on display for those of you looking for a little guide. Subjectively best to least best:)
not including seasonal specials-
The matcha basque cheesecake Probably the most interesting cake on the menu. It’s rich, it’s creamy and it’s just the right amount of sweet without making you run for water. But it’s definitely decadent, I would not suggest someone getting a latte next to the basque cheesecake as it’s definitely a dessert to be eaten by itself.
You can taste the quality and care of this cheesecake. Definitely the perfect cold season dessert.
Yuzu brownie Underrated, the yuzu brownie is a lighter version of a creamy/chewy dessert. It’s dense enough to be satisfying and fluffy enough to not feel overly indulgent.
The yuzu is a nice aftertaste that is refreshing when you are looking for a more summery dessert. It is also topped with some seeds on top, giving it extra crunch and texture that is very satisfying.
The shortcakes I stayed away from these cakes for a while, as they always looked the most “sickly sweet” to me. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised. The cream is light and fluffy and the fresh fruit makes for a refreshing touch.
Although not as heavy as the basque cheesecake, I was still feeling very full after the whole slice.
The Sakuramochi The lightest dessert of the whole selection, sakuramochi is absolutely delightful! It is my go to when I am ordering myself a latte as the mochi is light, sweet (and sour) and somewhat heartwarming.
Besides the fact that it looks very pretty, Sakuramochi is made with a pickled Sakura leaf, which has a light, savoury and unique flavour. This is pared with a red bean mochi. The mix of the two seems unlikely but it works so well (in my opinion).
The pickled leaf has an almost indescribable flavour to me, it is both slightly sweet and sour yet has some saltiness to it. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea, but definitely worth a try!
Montblanc tart
Having the lightest taste of all cakes, the montblanc tart is really homely, warm and creamy. The least sweet cake, montblac is full of the nutty flavour you’d expect it to have. For me personally, it is quite a complicated flavour.
Although it’s by no means my go-to, it is still delightful!
Matcha brownie Simple and sweet, the matcha brownie speaks for itself. Although there isn’t anything interesting about it, it is still a well made brownie with good quality matcha.
I tasted great and I would definitely choose it again when I feel like eating a lighter dessert with matcha in it.
The sesame soufflé cake Although a adore the fluffiness of this cake, I find it hard to find much flavour of the sesame in it. It’s fun and light but I would personally not pick it up again.
Matcha crepe cake Controversially, this is one of the least best cakes for me.
When I imagine a good crepe cake, I think about how indulgently creamy and dense it is— which this cake definitely delivers. It is also not sweet, so it’s perfect for those who don’t like super-sweet things.
However, I find that it is extremely powdery with the matcha sprinkled on top which makes it tasted unexpectedly dry.
But don’t take my word for it. It’s beautiful and a favourite of some of my friends. :)
Ichigo Daifuku
A bigger mochi, topped with a fresh strawberry and sprinkled with matcha powder. For my taste, the matcha powder makes the dessert bitter which doesn’t pair well with the fresh strawberry. Although the mochi is fresh and squishy, I would not pick this...
Read moreHorrible experience with Katsute 100—completely unprofessional and disorganized!
I wanted to order a whole strawberry shortcake for my wife’s birthday because she absolutely loves Japanese shortcake. I called their Brick Lane branch to arrange the order, explaining that it’s much closer to me than their Angel branch. The staff assured me it wouldn’t be a problem and directed me to their website—a clunky, poorly designed site with terrible UI.
I placed the order online, including a special request for the cake to be delivered to their Brick Lane branch. Wanting to confirm, I messaged them through their website. They responded, saying it wasn’t possible to deliver to Brick Lane and that it could only be picked up from their Islington branch. Reluctantly, I agreed and left it at that.
But shockingly, they decided to cancel my order without my knowledge. This was just because I had asked if delivery to Brick Lane was possible—not because I canceled the order myself. When I called to check on the order, they casually informed me it had been canceled and refused to take a new order for the next day. Keep in mind, this was a special cake for a birthday celebration!
To make matters worse, the manager was rude and kept changing their story mid-conversation. They showed zero accountability and insisted it was my fault for not responding to a chat message on their website—an email notification about the message went straight to my junk folder! Meanwhile, they had my phone number and email but never bothered to call or send a proper follow-up. Oh, and they’d already taken the payment without providing the cake or resolving the issue.
This establishment clearly prioritizes rapid expansion over quality or customer service. Zero remorse, no apology, and complete disregard for their customers. They are flying high on opening new branches but neglecting the basics of customer interaction.
They ruined what was supposed to be a special birthday surprise. If you care about good service and reliability, avoid Katsute 100 at all costs. This business doesn’t...
Read moreStaff members come across abrasive and inexperienced. The service is bad, the food is ok, and seats are uncomfortable. Overall, not worth your time.
The shop is tiny and the stools are small, wobbly, and have no back support (presumably to save space). You will be squeezing yourself amongst antique pieces of furniture.
I’ve had two kinds cakes so far. Matcha cheese cake: a little dense, dry, and crumbly Black sesame soufflé cheese cake: is not really a cheese cake, but rather a sponge cake. Decidedly ok.
Their system works like this. You find a seat, leave your bag there, go back to the counter and order your drink, and hope your bag is still there. The catch is no one is going to explain that to you. The staff are quite happy chatting amongst themselves.
First time I came here, I was standing in front of the counter to be shown to a table for nearly 10 mins. There were two staff members behind the counter and they were talking to each other the whole time. They were speaking some language other than English, I couldn’t tell what they were saying. I assumed they were busy but maybe they were just chatting.
In my second visit, I went straight up to the counter to order a drink. They demanded to know where I was seated. I told them I was going to get a drink anyway and try my luck with seats. They insisted on knowing exactly where I was sitting. It took me a while to persuade them, but I got my tea and cake at the end.
As far as I could see, they didn’t clear out the rubbish. So, I sat amongst dirty plates and cups left by previous customers the...
