Disaster! š± The most weird and awkward restaurant Iāve ever seen. Staff wasnāt happy to see us there all the time they looked at as āWhat do you want? Why you are here?ā. They really wasnāt welcome. Iāve seen menu online and they donāt say that menu in Islington is different than in Hackney so on the beginning big disappointment because dishes we been looking for doesnāt exist there. Shame. I ordered caffee latte which was flat white and really disgusting. I need to ask for spoon and sugar which I received when coffee was already cold. They donāt have drink menu. They served as tap water which we donāt want to drink so we asked for bottle of water and guess the answer? āWe donāt have bottle of waterā. ššš I need to go by myself to kebab shop next door buy 2 waters. They donāt have any fresh juices neither. We order 2 small orange juices in the bottle and when we finished them nobody asked do we want another round and the empty bottles stay with us till the moment we leave because waitress wasnāt bother to clean up the table. We seat outside and we couldnāt get an ashtray so we need to throw cigarette ends on the street. They said we canāt use toilet even to wash the hands because apparently has been broken since morning and nobody come to fix it. So they send me to the bar 30 meters away and guess what? Pub was closed today so toilet must be closed already long time ago if she even didnāt realise that pub she sent me was closed. So I went there for nothing. You need to bring your own nappies with you because thereās no toilet. š After starters waitress told us to keep the cutlery for main course š Can you imagine? Is problem for them to wash one more fork and knife. We order some kind of goulash meet was tasty and soft but rice was disgusting and the cheapest one. We also ordered khinkhali but they was frozen because Iāve seen waitress bringing them from freezer so donāt expect fresh food over there. Shame especially for that short menu which they offer. For an hour weāve been sitting like on funeral because they wasnāt bother to put any music. After they put really nice old Georgian songs. They donāt have alcohol license but waitress told us we can go to the corner shop buy alcohol. First time Iāve been in the restaurant when staff was drunk not me. Because table next to us was sitting lady owner and waitresses and they all been drinking vodka and beer during Iāve been sober. So they donāt sell alcohol but you can bring your own. Cash payment only, no receipt, waitress wrote down everything by the pen and she made mistake for Ā£10 and she said itās included service charge 𤣠The worst because owner was there and she saw everything so they just donāt care. Place looking like money laundry. They donāt care they just need washing machine to clean the money. I was embarrassed sitting there because it wasnāt only one issue it was like a domino effect. You have no idea how disappointed I am. I couldnāt believe what I saw. Place got potential and I believe the grey hair lady can cook very good but they just donāt care. Shame especially that thereās not lots of Georgian restaurants in London. Weāre not gonna come back to give a second chance was too many things go wrong. And I understand toilet can be broken but you can paid double money to someone come over and fix it not sending people to the pubs which are closed. It was just too...
Read moreTucked away just north of Bethnal Green, this is a proper little café-style restaurant serving a simple menu of Georgian classics. There is a standard starter menu of about 8 or so items that really should be treated the same way you would meze or tapas. Order a variety, and order a lot. In fact, you could easily make a meal of those and I'm sure we would have if the mains didn't smell so appetising. When it comes to mains, there were only four on the day and given that they are scrawled colourfully across a chalkboard, I can only assume they change periodically. But more on that in a bit.
For our first round or two, we dove straight in with a variety of dishes. I have no idea what the Georgian name is (sadly didn't take a photo of the menu) so I'll refer to them by key characteristics - if you go and describe them, I'm sure the staff will figure out what you want. The meat filled blinis are excellent with flavourful tender minced meat wrapped in a thin stretchy blini. LG does blinis to perfection and manage to avoid any stodginess or chewiness too often associated with such a food.
Next up, cheesy bread! It combines melted cheese and soft fluffy warm bread - what's not to like? Well, perhaps not for the lactose-intolerant among us although that didn't stop one of our party. It reminds me of home where I used to stop by a bakery every time we went out to the main cities and grab a labneh cheesy bread - so good! The little extra saltiness in the cheese stops this from being overwhelming as it could easily be a very rich dish. Instead, you find yourself craving more and more so definitely order the large portion!
Hmm...other important stuff. It's BYO so make sure to grab a bottle or two of your favourite stuff before hand. They don't care what you bring (so wine or hard alcohol is fair game) so extra points on that. Unfortunately, there is no off license nearby with the nearest bet being a wine shop and a Co-Op about 10 minutes away. Definitely book ahead - there are only around 15-20 covers tops in this place and it tends to be fairly popular. And if you need place to meet up beforehand, the Albion across the road is a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDecided to try here on a girls dinner catch up! It being January we were on a budget and were attracted as a BYOB place and that none of us had tried Georgian food before.
They advertise the wine shop opposite which does have a good range of wines including Georgian, but the hefty price tags (av £36 a bottle) meant that we probably should have stopped at a supermarket on the way.
We walked in to a busy bustling place which is always a good sign. We were shown to our table downstairs in a very interesting room of art. Nice but some of my friends found it weird looking at a giant photographic style mural of a nuclear power plant control panel whilst eating. Highly possible we missed the context of this.
The menu is simple but somewhat pricy for some things. The £22 Meze for example- as other reviews note, it is delicious but the morsal of sample each was a little stingy tbh. And it would have been nice to know the name of the dips.
Main menu gave a selection for meat eaters and vegetarians - we all managed to get something different and the experience was varied. The spicy chicken stew wasnt spicy at all, the bean stew was incredibly salty, the beef stew was nice and the aubergine dish was unexpectedly very spicy. One friend ordered the cheesebread with egg - which at £14.50 seemed very spenny for what it was. More of a side dish but at main prices.
Service was OK, ordering was smooth, food came and water was given - but there wasnt any niceties or particular customer care to note, which for me didnt match the prices of the food.
Nice enough but not sure I would go back. And if you are eating with anyone with an adversion to spice/chilli - DEFINITELY ask - because its not described...
