Very original place, superbly decorated, definitely a "wow" factor when you get in for the first time. Excellent service, high-end details but without the fuss.
: -beautiful place -open kitchen, nice to see the chef -excellent service, above average compared to similar restaurants -very appealing menu and wine list -all dishes tasted really good, perfectly cooked seasonal ingredients
: -Assuming plates are to share (which looks like everyone was doing) portions are too small. I know people always complain about this but I really found it not to be enough compared to similar restaurants that also do small plates. I usually eat this way: 1st bite "that's really good, I want more", 2nd bite, bit of wine to try with, "so good, want more", 4th bite, then the last bite that you really take your time to enjoy. Here it was more, 1st bite, "good I want more", 2nd bite and you realized the 3rd one was going to be the last one. Felt very frustrated because it was excellent and I just wanted more. Had to really force myself to eat slowly to make it last longer. -Definitely felt like if I hadn't ordered bread twice I would have left still hungry (we ordered 3 plates + 1 desert). -Wondered if plates shouldn't have been kept warmer. Most of the food got cold very quickly. -Most dishes I had were soft in texture. Felt like maybe a bit more crispy elements or more chewy elements would have added a nice change in texture and would have increased the time it took to eat a dish. This could be down to the choices I made though.
All in all, had a very good time and felt very good there. Service again was perfect, place made me want to stay for the whole day and food & wine were very good. Just had this little frustration of wanting to eat more! Will definitely come back - just felt like sharing what I hope will be received as a...
Read moreFrom the plentiful high reviews, I expected more. For £35, the lunch set is on par price wise with many michelin star establishments in the city. If you charge that price in a place like Haggerston, you really have to pull through. They didn’t, unfortunately. I’d rather not name the waitress and waiter on shift but they weren’t particularly warm or personable, service felt very robotic and rehearsed. Each question was asked because they were trained to. Our waitress turned even colder when we didn’t tip her for her subpar service. Barely even got a thank you or goodbye when we left. That was pretty shocking. The melon soup starter was refreshing and light, the pork terrine is just 1 portion to share between 2, as you can see in the pictures the main courses were about 3 mouthfuls per plate. The fish was light but pretty underwhelming. Felt like a starter. The duck offal in a vine leaf was interesting.. the flavours were more present but 1 vine leaf stuffed with minced offal and half a charred onion for a main course should actually be punishable by law. An onion? Are you actually for real lol. Complete joke This place is quite pretentious.. We definitely left hungry despite being charged £4 for the extra bread we asked for. You probably couldn’t crack a smile out of anyone working at this place unless you’re dropping some serious money. It’s a shame you could wake up on a sweet saturday morning after working all week, go and pay well above market rate for a few morsels of food and leave hungry anyhow. In an area like...
Read moreReally fantastic food, environment and service. Every dish I ordered stood a part from the next. I’m not great at identifying flavours, and in fact, I actually never write reviews but I’m going to give this a shot. 1) Because this restaurant is worth mentioning and 2) because the lady at the post office twisted my arm into giving the Post Office a Google review today and I think I should try to bury it with more genuine reviews or, I don’t know.
Anyways, the squash tartine was smoky, the tiniest bit spicy, also a bit meadowy. Honestly tasted like the end of September? Sorry, I’m from a farm town in Ontario and that’s just how I will identify this. The Sea Bream was tart/sour, also fresh with the thinly sliced cucumber, really delicious and reminded me of some of the ceviche dishes I’ve had in South America. The Brill with radishes in cream was my favourite. Capped with the ice cream dessert. In terms of the actual wine, I drank by the glass but the bottle selection was impressive so if that’s what you’re after, you won’t be disappointed.
PS. As someone who enjoys solo dining, I tend to people watch when I eat out and it’s always a hit or miss on how others will react to my presence. Sort of a fun game I play with myself to see how the vibe skews. I’ll say, I felt very warm sitting at a communal table among other solo dinners, a couple in love, and international friends (American, French and British, I believe) catching up around me. Very chill and I...
