So my girlfriend and I were planning a little trip to London in the midst my final university exam period. We all know how expensive London can be so we planned that we'd head to a chain restaurant that we looked up beforehand, The Slug & Lettuce.
We'd researched the menu for the bar beforehand hand liked the food we saw, plus the prices were not too bad either. We underestimated how busy it'd be so we didn't reserve a table beforehand. Our bad, it is London after all. Upon arrival, we were greeted quite abruptly with "Have you booked?". Of course, though, we hadn't. But a table was still available anyway so we were seated.
The waitress informed us that she would be back in a few minutes to take our order. Upon looking at the menu my girlfriend decided to have the Smothered Chicken (£10.29) and I wanted to have something different to what I usually eat when out and went for the Chicken Tikka Masala. We also decided to treat ourselves to a Zombie cocktail each (£9.95 2-4-1). It took a while to place this order since the waitress seemed more concerned with 'chilling' at another table of presumably her friends.
Once the drinks arrived and we tried them we couldn't complain too much, but that's where the lack of complaining ended. Let's talk about my other half's food first with a game I like to call "Spot the Piece of Chicken".
For reader convenience, I have pointed out the poultry in the picture.
It was dry, bland and even a 3-year-old child would call it bite-sized. I mean, for over £10 you'd expect your chicken to be a bit thicker than the knife you're cutting it with. When I say cutting I mean probing. I guess a good thing to say about this meal is that you can admire the majority of the plate that you're eating it off? Slug and Lettuce? More like Slug and LetUs disappoint you.
Now for my lovely curry... Once I got the plate to stop sliding around on the...other plate... I got to taste it. Not going to lie, it wasn't the best curry I had ever eaten in my life. The rice tasted like it had been cooking for as long as it had been grown for. The chicken, like Kirsty's smothered chicken, was on the dry side as well as bland. The sauce looked like it was mostly water and could have done with being simmered longer.
We were terribly disappointed with this meal. Terrible tasting food, you don't get much for your money, and chicken you could replace your window panes with. All in all, I give this place 1 star. That's half a star for the table not wobbling and half for the fact that the drinks...
Read moreA Birthday Celebration Utterly Ruined - Deceptive Pricing & Disgusting Conditions I booked the bottomless brunch at Slug and Lettuce Waterloo for my birthday celebration with a table of 15, hoping for a fun afternoon. Unfortunately, the entire experience was memorable for all the wrong reasons and I feel compelled to warn others. The first red flag was the pricing. The brunch was advertised online at £33.95 per person, which is why we booked. When the bill came, we had been charged £40 per person. When we questioned this clear discrepancy with the manager, the staff were incredibly dismissive and rude, offering no explanation. On top of this significant overcharge, they had the audacity to slap on a £150 service charge. Frankly, the service charge was an insult given the quality of everything else. The food that arrived was, without exaggeration, appalling. It was poorly presented, tasted awful, and the quality was so low I genuinely wouldn't serve it to my dog. The "bottomless" drinks were equally disappointing; cheap-tasting and poorly mixed. The state of the venue itself was stomach-churning. The toilets were absolutely filthy and the overpowering stench of old feces was just disgusting. It speaks volumes about the general hygiene standards of the establishment. I will say, our single waiter did the absolute best he could. He was trying to manage a table of 15 all by himself, and it was clear he was completely overwhelmed. This wasn't his fault; it was a clear failure of management to adequately staff the floor, leading to organised chaos and long waits. This experience was a complete disaster. The combination of bait-and-switch pricing, rude management, inedible food, and foul facilities completely ruined what should have been a special day. It felt less like hospitality and more like a calculated rip-off. Save your money and your special occasions – avoid this place...
Read moreI never tried slug and lettuce before so I went there few weeks ago. I think I will never go there again. I never had this much bad experience in any other restaurant in London🙅. My salad tasted horrible. It was very spicy in a bad way. Don’t get me wrong I like spicy food but that salad was terribly horrible🤢. My friend’s food was bad as well and cold as England’s winter😖. Top of that we asked them to substitute avocado with scrambled egg. They didn’t so we paid extra for it then it arrived after we ate our food. Not to mention again it was cold. So we had cold and horrible tasting food and waited for it more than an hour. Location of the restaurant was very convenient as it was 2 minutes walk away from London eye. We went during lunch time and it was moderately busy around that time. Waiting time was more than 1 hour. Service was horrible. The person who took our order wasn’t clear about the food. Then the person who served us gave our food to the wrong table (table was next to us that’s how I noticed). Then didn’t even apologise to the people who were there. Then when we asked for the eggs, he seems surprised. So we showed him the receipt and waited another 20 minutes just for the eggs. Also I think most of their reviews online are by bots. It’s all a scam. I’m probably not going back to any other slug and lettuce ever again. And will probably never recommend this...
