"Witness for the Prosecution" at London County Hall offers an unforgettable theatrical experience. It transforms the historic courtroom setting into an immersive stage for Agatha Christie's classic legal thriller. This play, masterfully directed and brilliantly acted, keeps the audience on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
The venue adds a layer of authenticity and drama with its grand architecture and imposing atmosphere, making it feel like one is attending an actual trial. The use of the courtroom space is ingenious, with the audience seated as if they were part of the jury, heightening the tension and engagement.
The performances are stellar, particularly from the leads. The actors bring their characters to life with such conviction and nuance that one cannot help but be drawn into the mystery. The portrayal of Leonard Vole, the accused, is compelling, with the actor adeptly balancing charm and ambiguity, leaving the audience guessing his guilt or innocence until the end. His lawyer, the formidable Sir Wilfrid Robarts, delivers a powerful and persuasive performance, capturing the wit and sharpness required for such a role.
The script, adapted from Christie's original work, is tight and well-paced. Each twist and turn is meticulously crafted to build suspense. The dialogue is sharp, and the courtroom exchanges are electrifying, keeping the audience engaged and on their toes.
A standout element is the interactive nature of the production. Audience members feel directly involved, mainly when addressed as the jury or witness unexpected twists and revelations. This interactivity enhances the overall experience, making it a play and an event.
The technical aspects of the production are equally impressive. The lighting and sound design subtly enhance the mood, while the period costumes and set design add to the authenticity and atmosphere of the era.
"Witness for the Prosecution" at London County Hall is not just a play; it's an experience that captivates and intrigues. This production is a must-see for fans of Christie, legal dramas, or simply top-notch theatre. It's a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the unique magic of live theatre. It is highly...
Read moreSuperb production of Agatha Christie . Exceptional and unique venue I've just seen the amazing Agatha Christie "Witness for the Prosecution" at London County Court {August 2019} and what a fabulous experience it is.The original character and architecture of the County Court is so beautifully preserved it sets the scene perfectly.
All of the staff I encountered - the doorman, the box office staff and ushers - were all very presentable, helpful and friendly so a joy to deal with.
My seat was South Gallery A1 which was a front row yet being only 5" tall (5"4 with my heels on) to get a good view I had to sit on the front edge of my seat leaning on the marble table/ ledge in front of me. I also noted that larger people were finding the tiny wooden stairs to the aisles challenging and as these ares have padded benches without armrest or any form of separation, you could be edged off by larger, less considerate patrons.
I'd recommend calling before booking if you have any accessibility requirements so the box office can advise you on the best seats.
You can also be part of the VIP Jury which entails sitting in the Jury box, having two complimentary drinks, a pre- event official Jury Summons which is quite unique though I declined this offer as I prefer to watch a performance not be part of it.
Ladies toilets were on the first floor, though only five cubicles all had characterful Victorian cisterns, were clean and well looked after and were surprisingly efficient.
London County Hall is less than a 5 minute walk for Westminster Station {Jubilee, District & Circle Lines} . Take the 4th exit out of the station then immediately left to cross the road onto Westminster Bridge. This bridge is busy with tourist, buskers even Darth Vadar {who blew me a kiss} so do allow extra time to navigate this. Once over the bridge take the first left into Belvedere Road and the County Court will be the grey stone steps on your left.
Excellent venue that I'd love to come back to see other productions in but I would aim for the lower floor clearly defined...
Read moreThe show (Witness for The Prosecution) was wonderful, but the staff and the infrastructure surrounding the area were not.
The entrance was a bit difficult to find; google maps directed us to the “london eye” side of county hall whereas the entrance is on the other side of the building. Very limited signing in the area to tell you where to go Staff is straight up yelling at people multiple times before the start of both Act I & II to make sure everybody is in the correct seat. I understand having to make sure everyone is in their right place, but it felt a bit overwhelming to have them yelling for no reason (everybody was in fact seated correctly), which was overwhelming.
Things i loved: the location really adds to the immersive experience of the show. cast members walked around the halls before the show started (although we did not realize they were part of the show at first), making it feel even more immersive free tap water at the bar before the show and during intermission
Things we did not love: the view from the gallery was great and the tickets were affordable, but the legroom is scarce and you really have to squeeze past others if someone needs to enter or exit the row the gallery seats are benches rather than seats, so this makes personal space a little bit of a problem depending on who you sit next to Bathrooms were very dated. 3/5 toilets in the ladies room in the left side of the courtroom were broken during our visit, resulting in long waiting times Tried the upstairs bathroom, where they did not refill the...
