Frankly, this restaurant is not equipped to serve the number of people they attempt to seat.
After having arrived at the restaurant for our booking on Friday 3rd December at 18:45, we were uneasy when we saw our table for 5 situated in the middle of their upstairs room. This room is a space of around 7m by 5m, with 2 and 4 person tables lining the walls with one larger table in the middle of the room. We were escorted to this larger table. None of us were able to comfortably move our chairs out from under the table without hitting the backs of the surrounding chairs of other guests. We raised our concern about the lack of space to the waiters and manager, who said this is the only space they have as all other tables are booked up. Please note, we booked 4 days in advance.
We sat down at our table and shuffled our seats in as much as possible. This left an approximately 5-10cm gap between the backs of our chairs and the chairs of the other guests in the room. Please keep in mind that this gap was necessary for the waiters to get to all tables in the room and there was no other way to reach most tables than along our table. Several waiters asked us to shuffle our chairs even further to let them pass, which was physically impossible, which we demonstrated, as we were quite literally hugging our table at this point. The manager came to speak to us and very rudely said there is nothing he can do because all other tables were booked. While we were having this conversation, the waiters physically were not able to pass to the other tables due to absolutely no space, so started passing food over our table and over my head specifically. A very uncomfortable experience.
The manager said he could show us a table downstairs, which we went to see. This was a 4 person table, lined by a wall on one side and with a 30cm gap to the next table on the other.... Obviously not able to accommodate a 5 person group.
At this stage, we were so frustrated and been made so uncomfortable by this whole ordeal that we opted to leave the restaurant and seek dinner elsewhere at 19:15 on a Friday night.
Overall, very very disappointing night and one of the worst experiences I've had recently in London. Would not recommend to anyone and would never go back. The restaurant positions itself as quite high-end with set menus costing as much as £85pp, however the ambiance, setting and service in the restaurant is worse than what you would expect at a McDonald's at 3am on a...
Read moreWe had a fantastic dining experience at TAKA Marylebone, a Japanese and innovative restaurant on the bustling high street in London. I had heard about their popular Wagyu Sukiyaki Rice, and I decided to try their TAKA Signature set menu, which included it. To start, they served a plate of Edamame seasoned with wild fennel salt and spicy kombu sauce, which was a delightful and savory appetiser. The Scottish Salmon Tataki was a highlight, with its seasoning of salt, seaweed/kombu, and green chilli sauce, enhancing the freshness of the salmon, giving it the feeling of a sunny morning at the fish market. The Miso-glazed Nasu Dengaku, featuring fermented banana miso and truffle, offered a perfect balance of sweet and savory, making me eat more. The Sesame Spinach Salad, with tender spinach, sesame, and crispy fried scallions, had a gentle and pleasing texture. The Popcorn Shrimp Tempura was a crispy delight, served with a combination sauce of Spicy Mayo and Butter Ponzu. My favourite was the Wagyu Sukiyaki Rice, which featured Kagoshima Wagyu beef with an onsen egg, all topped with sukiyaki sauce. It had a rich and creamy texture with the delightful aroma of Wagyu beef, and the addition of scallions was a perfect finishing touch. I highly recommend trying the Wagyu Sando (Wagyu Sandwich) as well, which was a delightful surprise. The Crispy Cod Crunch Roll was a tasty combination of avocado and cod, and the portion size was generous. For dessert, the Mochi Ice Cream had a plum flavour , and it was beautifully presented with a yuzu-scented pastry and buttery biscuits. The little flowers on the ice cream were a lovely touch. Please note that the menu can change, so it's a good idea to check with the restaurant. The two-person set menu costs £75 per person. Don't miss the Kasatu Michelada cocktail, especially if you enjoy fruity flavors. It's made with Mezcal, Pineapple, Citrus, Cucumber, and Kirin Beer, and it's a delightful choice for cocktail enthusiasts. Overall, TAKA Marylebone offers a wonderful culinary experience with a variety of delicious dishes and a...
Read moreThis was an exceptional restaurant made extra special by the creative food and the courteous staff at Taka. Upon arrival, I was escorted to my table on the second floor and they couldn't have chosen a better table for us. A warmly lit, corner table with cushion bench and a view of Marylebone High Street. I shared the room with other guests equally charmed by the relaxing atmosphere. Safe to say, any worries I was experiencing that day melted away.
When my fashionably late guest arrived we were given the time to reacquaint ourselves and read the menu. We ordered the Miso-glazed Nasu Dengaku, Snow crab and Blue Fin Tuna rolls and the signature Wagyu Sando. The miso-glazed aubergine treasure has buried its way into my heart. This was a perfectly sweet and savoury dish which left us wanting more. Take care sharing this dish with anyone, especially on a date. If you wish to make a lasting impression, offer your guest the last slice.
Accompanying our starter was the Blue Fin Tuna Crunch. A classic tuna roll made more exciting with the addition of what can only be described as a crunchy snow set above them. It really helped me appreciate how soft the fish was. The snow crab rolls were generously sized and refreshing. Yuzu Mayo and snow crab may just be a match made in Taka. Our final dish stole the spotlight, the Wagyu Sando. To the uninitiated, you may be asking yourself "What's so exciting about a beef between two floury baps?". You have never had a sandwich like this before. The sweet milky bread is toasted to a crispy golden brown. The wagyu beef was so tender, it came apart like un-toasted bread. If you visit this restaurant you, can't leave without trying it.
We snuck in a dessert, two flavourful mochi mango and coconut.
Thank you to the great staff who were waiting on us that evening. Next time I am in Marylebone, I hope you can...
