I’ve been drinking in London pubs for 40 years. I remember having my first pint down in Stockwell with my father and never have a come across a pub with such atmosphere and care as the Windmill. From the bar staff, to the food to the regulars. It feels like coming home. Almost like a country pub in a city setting. There is a charm and cadence which is incredibly difficult to conjure. I was served by a gentleman called Elias. As a person with a gluten intolerance, he was incredibly knowledgeable on what drinks I could and couldn’t have. I was recommended the Jubel. A peach beer, curious. It was delicious. Poured to perfection and delivered in a clean, cold and most importantly, branded glass. After a while I asked Elias for a food recommendation, he suggested the Fish and Chips, as it was infused with the companies own Frontier lager in the batter. The fish was cooked to perfection, batter crisp and fish just right. The triple cooked chips that accompanied my fish were perfect. After eating I left the establishment, well fed, watered and with a smile on my face. I’d 100% recommend The Windmill. A hidden gem, which hopefully doesn’t remain...
Read moreI hadn't been in The Windmill since it's refurb during the first wave of the pandemic, despite working round the corner we rarely went in. The pints weren't great, and it needed some TLC. I couldn't believe the transformation - the bar being moved to open out the entire place while keeping the cosy atmosphere is a dream achievement.
Fuller's beers and main offenders on tap, but an Wilde Child Brewing imperial stout on draft had me questioning if Dry Jan was worth it. Someone is being punchy with the beer choices, and a few rogue guest taps should intrigue the casual boozer. Food wise, I was also doing Veggie Jan, but the kilo of Chicken Wings for £18 also had me questioning life choices.
It was quiet for a Sunday afternoon, but staff were friendly and welcoming. The few that were in there were having a good time. Lucky Saint flew down in what I'd now recall as the best pint of it I had all month - they'd done a number with the branding too, everything felt special. This is how you do Dry January, not drinking and the pub don't have to be mutually exclusive, and I really truly hope some pubs...
Read moreThis is a lively pub in a lively part of London. Good for meeting friends with a wide selection of beers, Thai food and it shows sports on multiple screens, including a pull down large screen. Situated on The Cut between the Old Vic and the New Vic theatres it is in the middle of a lot of restaurants, mainly chain, and 'local' food stores. There is always a lot of people going up and down the cut and the Windmill is one of the better pubs in the area. I have been quite a few times since it is an easy place to meet when going to the theatre or for something to eat. I've never been able to get a place to sit without waiting for people to leave. The selection of beers was good, ranging from hoppy ales, through IPA's to dark beers. There is a menu of Thai food that looked good but I haven't actually had any so can't confirm the taste. Overall a good pub in a great location with easy access from Waterloo or Southwark...
