An ignominious side-entrance, off the Didsbury "strip" of chiefly franchised eateries, reveals an industrial stairwell suffused with the smell of reesty Frytol™. The restaurant's main space is Manhattan loft apartment meets The Lighting Emporium®, with an eclectic mix of styles, and scores of divers tables shoe-horned into every nook and cranny. The ancillary hardware was decent enough quality; the glassware was sparkling, and the Dacron™ napiery spotlessly white. Nice.
The food is rather good too, although the bone-in lamb was more towards "overcooked and stringy" than "meltingly tender", the keema naan slightly bereft of kimya - and the tarka daal of salt. I had to request a salt cellar to make good the latter shortfall and toothpicks for the former quibble at meal's end. The waiters were also somewhat tricky to prompt, often foolishly clumping together rather than working the large room, but friendly and attentive when buttonholed. The prices were approximately as high as they could get away with locally, which is on the high side for the North West.
The "atmosphere" was buzzing, with a surprisingly good turnout for a Sunday evening: a largely middle-aged, affluent white British clientèle. There must have been around seventy-five such cheerful locals when we arrived, thankfully few of whom were the hooting and cackling types. Half a dozen young British born chaps, whose antecedents preferred chapatis, lifted the thinning throng on our departure around 9pm.
The popularity of this place, together with a good choice of competently prepared Bengal-ish cuisine, and a refreshingly authentic and quirky eclecticism (by definition absent from the aforementioned chains which now infest Didsbury) make this a very good choice for a nice informal cuzzah of an evening in M20. It is NOT the best curry house in the UK - and happily doesn't claim to be - but you'll not likely be disappointed.
Take a bell (or a powerful flashgun perhaps) to attract the waiters' attentions as a top tip here: my...
Read moreI recently dined at an Sangam restaurant, and I must say that I was quite disappointed with my experience. One of the major letdowns was the lack of authenticity in the food. As someone who appreciates the rich and diverse flavors of Indian cuisine, I was hoping to indulge in traditional dishes prepared with care and precision. However, the restaurant fell short in delivering an authentic experience, leaving me questioning the true essence of the dishes served.
Additionally, I found the quantity of the food to be quite underwhelming. The portion sizes were notably small, leaving me feeling unsatisfied and wanting more. Considering the price point and the reputation of the restaurant, I had expected generous servings that would truly satiate my appetite. Unfortunately, I left the restaurant still feeling hungry and dissatisfied.
Lastly, the taste of the dishes was quite underwhelming. Indian cuisine is renowned for its bold and vibrant flavors, but the flavors at this restaurant seemed muted and lacked the depth I was anticipating. The spices and seasoning were not well-balanced, resulting in a bland and unexciting dining experience. It was a missed opportunity to showcase the true essence and complexity of Indian flavors.
Overall, my experience at this restaurant was far from satisfactory. The lack of authenticity in the food, insufficient quantity, and underwhelming taste left me feeling disappointed and questioning the restaurant's ability to deliver a true Indian culinary experience. I would hesitate to recommend this place to anyone seeking an authentic Indian and memorable...
Read moreif i could leave zero stars i would. we arrived at 8 pm and left at 10:20 pm have you ever heard of the saying time is money ?? because they havent. after one and a half hours of waiting for the mains after starters tensions were high, and no one wanted to be there anymore. we were told during our long long wait that if we simply waved our hand at the waiter and asked where our food may be, then we may have gotten served earlier. perhaps we were forgotten. we certainly felt so. they got our drinks wrong initially but had we had corrected them we may have been in for another 40 min wait that none of us wished to endure. but the bill at the end was shocking. despite the long wait, there was no deduction which would have been fine if they had not overcharged us. a £24 bottle of wine was added ?? they don't even have a bottle of wine for that much on the menu, check it. and they charged us £6 for a beer we did not even order. we asked about this and it was deducted but ??? had we not looked then we would have been paying to be royally mugged off. also when the woman came over, she was quick to say that she did not work here. okay so why are you handling our bill?? concerning the food itself, it was mediocre at best and the prawns tasted like they had been frozen. the currys were not spicy at all, the ones that were meant to be. confused at anyone who would become a regular, u must have some real patience. never coming here again. good luck...
