Exceptionally brilliant Japanese restaurant! The 2D 'comic' inspired decor is amazing. From the toadstool (shockingly comfy) seats, to the innovative design, the atmosphere is a real USP. Music at a perfect conversational, enjoyment level. Although, I would question the playlist choice for this type of restaurant. The food and drink, are phenomenonal. From the sushi, to the hot plates, (I've pictured a few), all cooked and prepared to perfection. The sushi is the best we've had in Manchester (for its price point), and trust me, we've been to many in Manchester. The sushi is refined, the hot plates seasoned perfectly. Chefs kiss.

Innovative drinks choices, I had Jenny's special, a milk drink which was sugary yet sublime. Prices were lower than expected which was pleasant. Although sushi doesn't break the bank, you never expect cheap prices. Here, it's budget friendly, and then some.

Despite my glowing recommendation... Service was a downside, while functionally perfect... I.e. was asked about allergens, no issue with ordering, and was explained everything... the waitstaff were akin to zombies... soulless... tired, never smiling, one could only sadly say, depressed. Bad day? On a long shift pattern? Who knows.

But this also transpired to other areas... cleanliness was a little lackluster, bathroom was a bit grimy and the whole place needs a deep clean. However, it is far from 'unclean' and the table and cutlery were clean (chopsticks come in packets). The service was the only blemish in an otherwise perfect meal. I would highly recommend Waku Waku, not just for the innovative design, but for the excellent food and the experience. You will not be...

The place definitely has some teething issues it needs to address.

The idea of an all comic restaurant is fun and stands out from every other restaurant. But being a restaurant it still needs good food to support itself. This is where I find the downfall is for Waku Waku.

I ordered from the lunch time menus and some extra sides. I have some small issues with the food, but I'm sure they can fix this easily. The seaweed salad wasn't what I was expecting as when I read 'seaweed salad' I thought I would be getting Japanese 'goma wakame', but instead I got a cucumber, cabbage, roe and imitation crab meat salad. Well presented at least. The katsu curry was quite bland and could do with more flavouring to bring out the rich umami and sweet flavours Japanese curry usually has. The pork was also very though to cut and eat. The portion size is a little small compared to competitors. The Karaage portions were wrong, but they did rectify it and gave a little extra too as an apology.

It is a great place to take your friends and family, but you have to go at opening time. As due to a lack of an online booking system it feels like first come first serve kinda place and usually has a line outside their doors after just 15 minutes

Not a wheelchair friendly place. The entrance has stairs before you even go into the restaurant.

I do like Waku Waku and It's a place I will come back to, as I see...

The food was good but do we comeback again unfortunately no 😞I booked table for my sons birthday, when we arrived my booking wasn’t on the list so have to wait for a table , then was a problem with our order they couldn’t find out what we wanted, 4times we have to consult with the waiter what has been ordered and still there was some food missing . Although restaurant look really cool as you’ve got feeling you are part of black and white comics the toilet, only one there was in pieces , water on the floor , broken sink , broken toilet seat 🤯 Also when I was booking the table received massage back from the restaurant that they will prepare something special for my son as a birthday treat , I thought this is really nice . I expected piece of cake with the candle , or something similar so he feels special , but again it was a little disappointing . And in the end there was chewing gum or something similar on my seat I did not realise until I left with big sticky stain on my bum and I cannot remove it from my trousers till now 😡🤦‍♀️ Only one lovely waitress there with little heart on her cheek saved the day , as she was very polite and helpful and apologised for inconvenience many times , otherwise I would be fuming spending there almost £200 and has been treated like that . I do understand they are very busy but do not felt served properly , and this is...

My husband's family from Singapore were visiting us in Manchester and my husband and I had been meaning to try Waku Waku for some time now. We were really glad that we could tie in a visit during their stay and experience the decor and really friendly atmosphere. The staff could not be more welcoming or patient with us, and there was a wonderful selection of food which was freshly prepared and delicious! My husband and I both ordered the set menu with assorted sushi and chicken karage which were very tasty, and our family members had the beef donburi bowls which were a generous size and very tasty without being loaded with salt or MSG. We also had a side of the prawn tempura which was really hot, crispy and tasty! The owner stopped off to say hello and made sure everything was okay with our meal too and we appreciated the personal touch! Thank you again for a wonderful lunch, friendly service and such an interesting concept with your cafe decor. You can tell a lot of hard work has gone into this - well done to the owners and the whole team for making this a really great experience for our family. We really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be coming back with our little daughter (who will love the decor as well as your food!) and recommending you to our family and friends!
