Had a booking at 9pm last night; as soon as we walked in it felt like we were in an old Italian jazz bar the kind you would have seen in the film "Talented Mr Ripley" the place was loud with conversation, laughter and music. I sat at the bar glancing at the applaudable wine and cocktail menu, I could not give it my full concentration due to the sounds coming from the jazz band setting up, the clinking of wine glasses and cutlery touching plates. We were later shown to our candlelit corner where the curved exposed brick wall leaned over us which gave us a touch of privacy, making us feel like the only couple in the room. Yet the restaurant was full, an atmosphere that was a holiday for the senses. We had ordered the cheese, bread and cured meats to begin; an excellent way to start our Italian experience. From the soft, melt In your mouth buffalo mozzarella to the smokey chorizo, the board itself was a sample of Italy. Whilst we waited for our main it's was wonderful to bathe in the humble glory of the room. The Jazz band began to play on the red velvet stage. They played quietly enough to hear next table discuss political matters of Trump and congress but you knew of their presence with the brushing of the drum symbols and soft vocals. My attention was quickly diverted to the plate under my nose; consisting of a simple Pork Fillet and potatoes. The pork was beautifully dressed in a black truffle and mushroom sauce. It was cooked to perfection and delight for the palate. The plate had two main ingredients, one sauce and that's all that was needed, the simplicity spoke volumes! I would most definitely recommend this dish and praise the genius behind it. Clearly a dark horse of the Nottingham's food and wine scene, sometimes overlooked as it sits quietly in the heart of the...
Read moreHighly disappointed.
95% of my reviews are always highly rated and positive.
Having visited the pelican club numerous times, we always received impeccable service from the Hungarian waiter. Highly efficient. Personable and professional.
The venue very atmospheric too.
The food is always just ok and if we were just going out for food then we would have eaten elsewhere.
On this occasion we were 10 minutes early and we were asked to sit opposite the bar, highly unfortunately a tealight fell from about 8 feet high from a small alcove onto my husbands body, waxing his clothes, and totally ruined them for the weekend.
Dan proceeded to apologise, accept full liability snd pay for the dry cleaning.
We were in shock.
Hot wax hit me and my husbands skin.
We are not people to cause a fuss and we wanted to continue our first evening out in over a year since I am fully recovered and no longer under treatment. It was a personal achievement and celebration.
We ate, enjoyed the music and left with no further reassurance or check in. We had to find a new jacket for the next days event as we were miles from home.
On luckily the wax coming out at the dry cleaners, I sent the bill over for £20 pounds and received an unprofessional response from Dan.
We still haven't received any payment.
Needles to say sadly that we will no longer ever visit nor reccomend the pelican club.
Times are hard for everybody including us, there is no excuse for being a...
Read moreHad really high expectations and food was alright, but one or two members of staff are quite nasty (and others are wonderful), we waited for 45 minutes for food which wasn’t a problem as it was a Saturday night, so politely asked for some bread. When the bread came it was icy cold to the point it was wet, so I mentioned it was cold; the managers immediate response was ‘well that’ll be because I took it out the fridge’ right close up to my face with such an attitude, why be rude? He said it in front of our whole table and was so patronising. We were semi dumbfounded but didn’t say anything. The host then proceeded to walk to the till and repeat the conversation to their colleagues, right in front of us, and mimicked my voice. After someone on my table asked what he had said, rather than apologising he proceeded to completely avoid us for the rest of the evening and even kept his back to us. I work in retail, I understand the perils of customer service but please don’t sit there and take the mick out of paying customers, it’s unbelievably unprofessional and very rude . Unfortunately I’m not inclined to be returning, as the food didn’t make up for the self...
