Between the 3 of us we spent almost £90 and ultimately I feel we'd have recieved nicer food if we'd gone to a Yo Sushi outlet in Tesco and spent £20.
First off the drinks arrived - both my partner and friend ordered Sake and it was just provided with the decanters and no actual cup, so they both drank from the decanters. Then an order of Salmon Maki arrived - it was a little messy in it's presentation and the sizes a, but ultimately not a big deal at that point. Then the £9 tray of 8 Yo Rolls arrived and I was shocked. They were smaller than the maki with even less salmon in. I have a photo of the maki next to the yo rolls as evidence. I order them all the time as they're my favourite but have never had them this small. For an item that is twice the price of the other, that is not acceptable. After, my Katsu Curry bowl arrived with no garnish. My partner's Korean Chicken Bowl then came out and despite the menu showing 8 pieces of chicken in the photo, it only came with 4 and a meager portion of rice. When these 2 meat items were served they were handed to our table from across the (working) belt and the closest person was my friend who is Vegan - she would have preffered not to handle the meat food but I guess this is something else that doesn't matter to Yo. When her hoisin mock 'duck' poke bowl arrived half of the toppings were missing, namely the sweetcorn, edemame and slaw. The sauce was also just poured on and not in the pot as advertised on the menu, again. Also she ordered half and half rice and it was all just sushi rice.
We finished most of the food but asked to speak to someone afterwards, as no-one had come to check on us whilst we were eating.
I assume the guy was the supervisor on duty
Regarding the size of the Yo Rolls, he said the ones we'd had previously (aka the correct sized ones I've been ordering for the past 5 years) must have been made wrong. Then changed his mind and said there had recently been a recipe change to the Yo Rolls and they were now smaller - is that true? If I go to the Yo Sushi in Birmingham tomorrow, will they be the size of a 50p there also? After that comment he then said it was 'subjective'. I asked why they were more expensive than the maki (which was bigger) and he said it was because they have more salmon in.. which ours had the same if not less in. Things are either to standard or they're not, and these absolutely were not, it was embarissing. During this part of the conversation, another chef was cleaning the booth next to us and heard what we were saying about the Yo Rolls and actually commented himself that they were 'abit small' to which the Supervisor.. in front of us.. told him to 'shut the F**K up'. If that doesn't sum up the experience, I don't know what does. Totally and utterly unacceptable to speak to another member of staff like that infront of customers. Not only that, the chef admitted infront of us that the food was small, and the Supervisor still continued to say that we were the one's in the wrong.
I mentioned the garnish on the katsu curry and he said 'well we've got everything in stock I'm not sure why they're not putting it on'... well me neither!
I mentioned how there were only 4 pieces of korean chicken when the menu shows 8 pieces, but this didn't get explained. And even if this is not the restuarant's fault, that is bad form of Yo! to advertise one thing and provide another. It does not specify that you only get 4 bits of chicken so anyone would look at the menu photo, see 8
My partner is Autistic and admittedly can come across with a strong tone, but the Supervisor said 'if you weren't so rude maybe I'd have given you a refund'. When my partner pointed out he was autistic, he didn't say that anymore, but is he admitting we should have had a refund for the standard of experience we had? If we were coming across rude, it was no more than he was coming across like we didn't know better. We weren't 'first time customers', we're regulars, and this shop is the only place we've ever had such a...
Read moreI had recently heard from a friend that the desserts at Yo-Sushi! are unique, delicious and low in calories.
I had to see for myself, so I went on over there today for a taste test.
There's 7 desserts in total but I tried 5 desserts. They were absolutely gorgeous.
Strawberry cheesecake mochi - 185kcals
When I lifted this dessert with my chopsticks I was surprised to find it was very delicate and soft.
It smelled very sweet and pleasant, of strawberry and vanilla. The texture is most probably the best thing about it - it's a curious cross between gooey marshmallow and a sweet dumpling, but firmer and really melts in your mouth and has an intense, creamy fruity strawberry cheesecake flavour that packs a real punch. It's advisable to put pop the whole cake piece into your mouth as it's gooey and stretchy if you cut it, and the fullness of the whole thing creates a certain kind of indulgence and satisfaction. All in all highly recommended, very tasty and you really can't find anything similar anywhere. 10/10
Chocolate Mochi - 204kcals
Very similar to the other Mochi, but has a deep dark aroma of rich chocolate that hits you first. The texture is similar but less gooey as the filling is a luscious chocolate ganache that really melts into an explosion of flavour. Very satisfying and calms chocolate cravings. 9/10
Custard Dorayaki - 138 kcals
This dessert is very surprising. It looks plain, just like some thick custard sandwiched inside pancake, but it's much more than that. It has a thick filling that's very similar to creme patisserie and the pancake is the softest and fluffiest I've ever had. And I've had plenty. The combination is very good, but the raspberry sauce that comes with it brings a sharp, cleansing refreshment to the sweetness of the custard. Really good dessert, not heavy at all, and would make a perfect end to any dish. 8/10
Matcha Roll - 231kcal
At first I wasn't going to buy this, but the friendly staff serving me said they had tried it and were surprised by the taste. So I tried it and felt the same. The idea of matcha (japanese green tea) doesn't appeal to me in a dessert as it can be bitter, but in this dessert it came out very delicately and was more of an aroma than a strong flavour and added to the overall experience of the dessert. The swiss roll was very fluffy, sweet enough and the cream was really luscious and the azuki beans added an interesting dimension to the flavour overall. Really interesting dessert, definitely worth a try. 8/10
Japanese Souffle Cheesecake - 165kcals
This sounds really decadent and sweet, and looks deceivingly fluffy. Unfortunately this dessert didn't do it for me - I felt the whipping of the cheesecake didn't create the result I'd like - it needed to be a little sweeter to make the fluffiness work, but people who like less sweetness to their dessert would definitely like this delicate dessert. 5/10
All in all the desserts were lovely, none was over 230kcals, and they did the job without breaking the calorie bank - although...

What a disaster! Such a shame, this place has really gone downhill, we last visited just over three years ago. We almost didn't go due to the previous bad recent reviews but decided to give it a try as we felt our usual sushi establishment didn't make us feel welcome, almost with distain the last time we went in despite being regular customers for years, what a mistake going to yo sushi.
This time the floor was dangerously filthy and extremely slippery, covered in grease and god knows what. Everything was filthy, the takeaway cabinet, every surface, was covered in something or other, from grease and thick grease with dust in it, to food waste, the entire menu was greasy and had splodges of food or whatever on it, the conveyor belt hadn't been cleaned in ages as it had food waste on it, deep in the grooves. Food was wiped onto the floor by waiters and chef, this surely contributed to the disgrace the floor was in. Really grotty, absolutely disgusting.
The place is seriously understaffed and hasn't seen a deep clean in a very long time.
We had gone in and had booked a week previously for the set menu, but the staff didn't have a clue and we couldn't have it as there was one thing not available on the set menu and the waiter didn't answer when we asked if it could be substituted for an alternative, just went silent on us. We were told just to order from the menu instead. We had gone for the set menu so we didn't have to think about what to order and just get extra bits if we wanted them.
We went in really looking forward to a treat which my partner had really been looking forward to for a long time, we were absolutely ravenous and ended up walking out without eating anything as what we had ordered was taking an age due to being understaffed. Considerable time and effort was wasted and the whole experience ruined our evening. It was one thing after another with apps not working and food not being what we had booked online etc.
The staff were friendly and did their best to try and help but it was just a complete disaster and we needed to be fed, decisions needed to be made so we upped and left. No sign of management in sight.
No idea what the take out was like but that seemed to take a priority over the restaurant side of things. I would be very surprised if anyone who ate here didn't come down with food poisoning.
Don't think we'll ever be back again.
UPDATE - we did end up going back again as my partner really wanted to, I was very reluctant and didn't want to go. I must say there have been some much improved changes. More staff on, cleanliness levels have improved, the place has seen a lick of paint, we actually ate this time around and weren't disappointed. All in all, very much improved. Well...
