I’ve visited this restaurant 3–4 times now. The food has consistently been excellent, and their filter coffee is genuinely the best I’ve had in the UK. Unfortunately, the service has always been subpar, and today was the worst experience yet.

I stopped by around 8 PM for a coffee and some light snacks; two vadas and one masala papad. After waiting 20 minutes, a server came over to let me know my “masala chai” would be out shortly. I corrected her politely and reminded her I had ordered two filter coffees, not chai, and also requested that all items be served together.

Despite this, another 10 minutes passed before the vadas arrived, and another 10 minutes after that for the papad. Still no coffee. After a total wait time of nearly 50 minutes, I decided to leave. When I asked for the bill, the server told me the coffee would be out in “just two more minutes” and walked off to retrieve it. I explained I had another commitment and preferred to cancel the coffee. She insisted it couldn't be cancelled and I would have to pay for it anyway.

At that point, I asked to speak to the manager. Only then did she return with the bill, this time without charging for the coffee.

To be fair, the place was busy. But that doesn’t excuse the clear mismanagement. Only one server seemed to be doing any work, while three others stood behind the bar counting change for 20 minutes. The table next to mine remained uncleared for over half an hour after the guests had left.

It’s genuinely disappointing. The food and coffee deserve praise, but the lack of basic service standards is dragging the whole experience down. With better staff training and management, this could easily be one of the best spots in town. For now, I won’t...

A South Indian Gem in the Heart of Nottingham!

As a South Indian myself, I’m usually quite particular about authenticity but Amma’s Kitchen completely blew me away! I recently visited with my boyfriend, and we both left genuinely impressed not just by the incredible food, but also by the warm, thoughtful service and beautiful aesthetic of the restaurant.

We were served by Ansha, who was absolutely lovely checking in on us regularly and making sure we were comfortable and happy with everything. Her kindness and attentiveness made our experience even more special.

We ordered two meal deals that were packed with flavour and beautifully presented:

🥘 Paneer 65 + Chicken Kizhi Porotta + Mango Lassi. The paneer was perfectly crispy and spiced, the kizhi porotta was rich and aromatic, wrapped in banana leaf with layers of flavour, and the mango lassi was smooth and refreshing.

🍛 Kudal Pepper Fry + Amma’s Special Porotta + Rose Milk. The kudal fry was a bold, peppery delight with just the right heat, and the porotta was flaky and soft…just how it should be! The rose milk was nostalgic and soothing, the perfect end to the meal.

Everything looked as good as it tasted. I’ve got photos to prove it! 😉 This place is a must-visit for anyone wanting an authentic taste of South India. Whether you’re familiar with the cuisine or trying it for the first time, Amma’s Kitchen welcomes you with heart, soul, and serious flavour.

We’ll definitely be back. Thank you for such a...

A nice vibe, music was great and food was good. Interior decor and atmosphere was really nice. We have been here a couple of times now and they have really improved on all aspects.

Mutton rolls - 5/10 good taste, we got one portion of two rolls and they were good. However was a little disappointed as there were two mutton pieces in my roll. But was happy it was served with sweet chilli sauce - we believe they don’t serve this anymore

Chilli Kobi - 10/10

Paneer 65 - 9/10

Mutton Kotthu Rotti - 9/10. Was very tasty and moist but the lack of meat brought the score down.

Briyani - 8/10

Madras Chicken curry - 6/10

Butter Chicken Curry and Parotta - 6/10

Poori - 9/10 fantastic texture but the oil was wayyy too much. Maybe it could be served with better curries, as lettuce and onion was a bit random too.

Kesari - 8/10 good portion size

Halwa - 5/10

Lion lager strong - fantastic portion size - there was a buy one get one free offer so we got two

Service - improved ALOT since the first time we went. Very happy with the service. Was very pleased.

Place to wash hands would be nice (other than toilets). Toilets...

I had a really great experience at Amma’s Kitchen! I ordered the biryani (about £10) and my friend had the masala dosa (around £9). The portions were really generous so much so that I even took some biryani home and had plenty left for dinner. It’s definitely good value for money compared to many other places that charge more but serve less. The food itself was excellent. The biryani had just the right amount of spice, comforting and authentic, not toned down in the way some restaurants tend to make it. It honestly felt like proper homestyle cooking, the kind you’d expect from a Tamil kitchen. My friend really enjoyed her masala dosa too. Overall, Amma’s Kitchen serves delicious, authentic food with generous portions at a fair price. If you’re craving South Indian flavors, this is a spot worth visiting!
