Ventured out on a cold midweek evening for the first time since moving to the area recently to be warmly greeted by the proprietor and offered a table close to a comforting radiator in an otherwise empty restaurant to enjoy a rare treat.
The sight of empty tables is I suppose, indicative of the times we are living in with many people struggling with the ever increasing cost of living making eating out way down the list of priorities.
Perused over the menu whilst munching the obligatory poppadoms and decided on two starters, one of a thinly sliced potato bite and the other a vegetable filled dumpling both served with a pleasant chutney which were very moreish and generous so much so that we asked if we could take the last few remaining bites home to enjoy the following day.
The mains of lamb LEKALI KHANA and chicken NEPALI KAHANA with a shared rice and a coriander and keema naan were interesting, all of which was washed down with several bottles of Gurkha beer.
With the bill coming in at just under £70 for the two of us we both felt it was good value, but as I said earlier it is indeed a rare treat, one which unfortunately can't be repeated regularly as much as we would like too despite the good quality, great taste and excellent rapport with the owner, but we will revisit when we are able.
If your purse strings allow, I'd strongly recommend that more South Wigston locals to dine at this lovely eatery.
As for the potato bites the following day, pan fried in a little cold pressed rapeseed oil....just as delicious as the night...
Read moreWorst experience in a restaurant in my life. Was meant to be a nice family meal, drinks were ok, took over half an hour to have our order taken, over an hour to get the food to us, and when it did arrive, half of it was missing. A waiter then came over with the order he had wrote down asking us to point out what was missing after us already telling them several times. We then had to wait another half an hour for it to turn up. All they could say in this time is 'it will be worth the wait' and I can assure you it was not! I had the delight of having a hair embed in my garlic naan, my partner's tikka massala did not resemble a massala and tasted like tinned tomato soup.
But wait, there's more!
After raising all this, they brought us another naan out, which we had clearly said not to do, then proceeded to argue Infront of all the restaurant about who had taken our order.
We paid for drinks and left. The guys sat next to us waited an hour and half to have their order taken and ended up leaving, still with no order taken!
To say it was a bad experience is an understatement. Staff were all over the place, trying to order drinks was painful, food was contaminated and put us off eating end of story, but their service and professionalism was god awful.
Save your time and money and stick to the restaurants you know.
Such a shame that the new owner has dragged the name of what was a good restaurant in wigston though the mud. If the old owner could see it now...
Read moreI visited Gorkha 8848 last week with friends, and the experience was truly memorable. From start to finish, everything about the evening was excellent.
The restaurant has a warm, inviting ambiance — soft lighting, tasteful décor, and comfortable seating that immediately makes you feel relaxed. The staff were friendly, attentive, and very knowledgeable about the menu — they helped us choose dishes that matched our preferences and were always nearby without being intrusive.
We started with momos and popadoms with colorful dips, which were beautifully presented and a great introduction to the meal. For mains, I tried their Bhutuwa curry and Lamb Tikka Masala. The spices were perfectly balanced — bold but never overwhelming, and the meat was tender and cooked just right. The portion sizes were generous, and every dish had fresh, vibrant flavors.
The highlight was how the service elevated the meal: our server checked in at the perfect times, offered to explain unfamiliar items, and even offered to take a group photo for us — small touches that made a big difference.
In terms of value, I felt the food and experience were very reasonably priced given the quality. We left feeling satisfied, impressed, and eager to return.
If you’re in Leicester (or nearby) and craving Nepalese / Indian / Indo-Chinese cuisine done well, Gorkha 8848 is definitely...
