Rancho Steakhouse — Restaurant in Portsmouth

I took my partner for NYE dinner and was very underwhelming. The lack of communication between staff was clear to see. Service was slow and the staff seemed inexperienced. The first real issue started when the main courses came out. I ordered an off menu 800g ribeye which i've done for almost all times i've been to ranchos, when the waiter served my steak it was clearly only a 200g steak as it was smaller then my partners 200g fillet, I had to question it twice before they returned it to the kitchen and after discussions with the chef they acknowledged that it was wrong and they said they had to cook me another steak. They gave me back the 200g steak and said they'd serve me another 600g once cooked which was a bit disappointing but acceptable. I had to wait and ask 3 times for my peppercorn sauce whilst I watched the waiting staff serve other desserts and tables, by the time I finally got the sauce our steaks were pretty much cold. When the 600g arrived around 15-20 minutes later it was rare at best I'm not fussy when it comes to steak but it was inedible and I ordered it MEDIUM so I had to get it sent back to be cooked more. Whilst this was going on I ordered a coke which I had to ask for 3 times and then finally they came to the table with 2 cokes, another example of lack of communication or understanding from the waiting staff. To be fair once the 600g had been cooked a second time it did come out piping hot and a good medium steak. Lastly we had to ask for the bill twice which took around 15 minutes to be brought to us. No offer of reducing the bill or any courtesy given all of the problems, it is a real shame as I've never had such problems and have been a long standing customer as I always find it to be a good steakhouse. Had high expectations but came away very disappointed.

Our party made a reservation for 20:00. On entering the restaurant we were told that they were running behind and that if we waited next door in the Irish pub they'd get us in 5-10 minutes. 25 minutes passed and we still hadn't been summoned. We re-entered the restaurant and they were still not ready for us. We were asked to stand by the bar until a table was ready. No real apology was offered.

We eventually sat down and placed our orders. It took nearly an hour for our food to come out being 2130 now. We were particularly upset that a couple of groups that had come in after us had already received their food and were eating. Eventually our food came and once again no apology was made.

We would also like to point out that a couple of us had to substitute our fries as they had run out however the tables that arrived later all had them. Surely it should be run on a first come, first serve basis.

At the end of the meal we voiced our complaints. The gentleman that spoke to us wasn't very empathetic and defensive. He walked off before giving us a revised bill saying that 10% had been taken off. On inspection it appeared that only the service charge had been removed. We decided not to complain further and just pay up and leave as our taxis were outside. We felt very uncomfortable and upset that no sincere apology or gesture was made.

Visited the steakhouse with my family, I visited Rancho once before and has underdone steak but I decided to give it another go, taking limited options around that area. I wished I would have gone elsewhere. My steak Ribeye, was cooked correctly, but I have never had so much chunks of fat in ribeye steak. I am aware it's a fatty cut but it was like some bad market quality cut. Although it did look good, it was not tasty! Plus the sauce tasted like a bag sauce with fresh peppercorns added to it, not impressed. Additionally sides ( that you pay extra for) were disgusting. Chips the same ones I buy in Tesco, and the bad cost less than they charge for a few peaces. Beans covered in some tomatoey sauce - I hate tomatoes. Should have been put on the menu. Spinach undercooked and soaked in cream. Mushrooms were ok. Starter was very salty. Not edible. Why did I not return the food ? Whats the point if everything is not right? Especially when you save yourself the whole day for the meal, don't eat much you end up really hungry. Toilets - I was about to be sick when I entered. Surely someone should be responsible to check how clean they are?...
