Disappointing from start to finish. We booked a table in advance but still had to wait to be seated for around 15-20 mins. After we were finally seated, it took another good while until our drinks order was taken. By this point we were ready to order our food and we made sure to be very clear about specific dietary requirements of our table. The waitress confirmed all the items in our order with us and we waited for about an hour for our food.
Once the food finally came, it was like chaos had decended upon our table. About 5 waiters were circling around with different dishes. There was a lot of confusion in the dishes they gave us; they gave us 2 dishes that we did not order, had missed 3 items off, and when we asked if they could confirm if there was no meat in a couple of dishes, no one seemed to know- even the managers who were also circling around. This was troubling by for us due to the dietary requirements and allergies.
The dishes themselves were all over the place. I ordered the Butter Chicken which was very average. You could get the same meal from a co-op ready meal. My partner ordered the Daal Makhani which was so insanely spicy and bitter tasting it was barely edible. This was advertised as creamy and wholesome, neither of these words I would use to describe what he got. There were no spicy warnings anywhere and he would not have ordered this if he knew the spice level.
Our friends ordered the vegan mixed grill which was quite frankly pathetic. Barely enough for 1 person let alone shared by 2. I wish I took a photo of it as it was honestly laughably bad - a couple of balls, a samosa and a couple of bits of “fake” chicken (still not sure if it was fake or not) on a bed of onions (no peppers as described in the menu).
We complained about the missing items and additional items we seemed to have accumulated and yet more chaos seemed to occur with the waiters and managers. No one seemed to have a clue what was going on. It gave us a very uneasy vibe that we were not being looked after and at this point we were ready to just eat and go. When the bill came, they over charged us for the shared mixed grill which we pointed out, afterwhich they apologised and amended the bill.
This was honestly one of the most bizarre and chaotic dining experiences I’ve ever had. It’s disappointing as I was so excited about this place.
For those with allergies, beware: the restaurant doesn't thoroughly check for allergens. Also a simple solution for improvement: include spice ratings...
Read moreMy recent visit to Tap and Tandoor at Gunwharf Quays was a culinary delight with a few hiccups along the way. Here’s a detailed account of my experience:
Ambiance and Decor The ambiance at Tap and Tandoor was quite inviting, providing a cozy yet vibrant setting. The decor was a blend of traditional and contemporary elements, making it a comfortable place to enjoy a meal.
Service Quality Service was excellent and fast. Nikki, our server, was absolutely fantabulous. She was attentive, friendly, and made sure all our needs were promptly met. Her professionalism truly enhanced our dining experience.
Food We ordered the Tandoori Platter, Naan, and Paneer Butter Masala. The Tandoori Platter was a standout with its perfectly cooked and well-seasoned assortment of meats. The Naan was soft and fluffy, a perfect accompaniment to the rich and flavorful Paneer Butter Masala. Each dish exemplified authentic Indian cuisine at its best. First Impressions
Unfortunately, our initial welcome was less than stellar. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a man who seemed unsure about how to welcome customers. His approach was rather abrupt, asking us where we were going, which felt a bit unwelcoming.
Value for Money The pricing was reasonable for the quality and quantity of food provided. Given the excellent service and the delicious dishes, Tap and Tandoor offers good value for money.
Overall Impression Despite the initial hiccup at the entrance, our overall experience at Tap and Tandoor was highly positive. The ambiance, the quality of food, and Nikki’s fantastic service more than made up for the rocky start. I highly recommend Tap and Tandoor if you’re looking to try authentic Indian cuisine in Portsmouth. The Tandoori Platter and Paneer Butter Masala are must-tries, and with great service from staff like Nikki, you're sure to have an enjoyable...
Read moreThe food itself was good and service was quick despite being busy, prices are fair but recovery service was poor. After receiving two glasses both with lipstick around the rim myself and my partner just decided to drink from the other side of the glass and let it be, then once our food came out I had found a long thick curly black hair in my dish, please note that I am bald, when I then explained to the waiter he then replied to me "are you sure?" I took this as undermining my complaint so I further discussed with him the lipstick on the glasses and he had an empty look in his eyes that showed no care or consideration for these issues that should not occur, we both felt a burden for their own error, a manager then came over to replace the dish and both drinks, once they brought out the food we then had to ask for our chips back, when I asked they replied "let me check on our system if you ordered chips" well I wouldn't ask if I didn't order them and even if this is their procedure then they should learn to word it differently.
My lamb chop was thicker than the first one they brought out and was cold in the middle so I left it on the side because one can only complain so many times I guess,
The reviews are very good and I guess no matter the quality of a place mishaps occure, but how they recover these issues is the main reasoning behind this complaint.
There is nothing available here that will make me want to return in the future unless more care is provided for the customers who keep...
