Was my local for a while now I still come here even though I live the other side reading. It has hands down the BEST beer and cider selection for 30 miles I any direct with 10 every changing real ales on tap about and other 8 top pressure or key keg on the wall. If that wasn't enough there are usually 8-12 real ciders available cold or room temperature at any one time and this is before you get to your standard beer taps and bottles.
Price wise most beers or ciders are cheaper than anywhere other than 'spoons and a 4 pint pitcher of most standard ales and ciders are available for £13. The top pressure/key kegs can get quite expensive. Spirits are quite reasonable though.
The place is dog friendly and always bustling in the evening especially in summer and has a great decent sized beer patio out back. It is almost always ram packed at the bar on footy nights and fridays but there's always somewhere to sit outside and the locals and bar staff are very friendly.
They do serve a limited food selection of sandwiches made daily on a when it's gone it's gone basis and they do slow cooked pulled pork baps as well as pies etc at a very reasonable price.
All in all it probably the best pub in reading with the Alehouse and Castle tap coming a close second. I'd recommend it...
Read moreFirst visit since before Covid - The Nags have done an incredible job of not only making their garden safe and secure, but also welcoming and enjoyable, having upgraded their marquee, despite the heavy rain we were still dry and warm and enjoying our pints. Unlike some other places, they've adapted to table service really well and you're able to order and receive your drink in a reasonable time! Still got one of the best range of beer in Reading, and their grub is perfect for a mid afternoon snack (artisan sausage rolls, proper sandwiches and smoked/pulled meats - And there are veggie options too) Can't praise the team enough for giving us a brilliant proper Saturday pub...
Read moreA ever-changing choice of twelve different ales sorted by percentage, ways including a mild and a stout, loads of ciders (some you can even choose between chilled or room tempature) good wines, loads of edgy craft ales, lovely atmosphere and friendly but top service. The staff are always happy to help you choose your pint and they know their stuff. (Whitout being all snotty about it. Just chilled out knowledge.) Darts, games, piano, fireplace, all is welcome. Just what a pub should be. Good roast too! Best pub for miles and miles! P.S. They even tell you which ales are vegan friendly using little badges. So if you are vegan you don't sound like a silly...
