When we arrived we were shown to our table at the back — the table next to ours had their dogs lying on our seats. They did get them down but was off putting watching them feed them off their plates while they sat on the bench beside them.
The service was strange — the man who sat us was quite flat and uninterested — I think he was a manager? The guy who took our order seemed decent until he must have gone on a break because after that we just sat for ages and ages. I did see him go for a vape however he never returned to clear our table. When we finally were cleared I asked for the bill (to the manager) but it never came. All of the staff seemed preoccupied with opening boxes in the middle of the restaurant — weird for a Saturday afternoon. After 30 minutes my partner got up and asked again — the guy who brought it over was really nice, a shame he was from another section. When we left the man we’d originally asked for the bill was sitting in the main restaurant eating lunch. So obviously that was the priority.
Our guests had to make a train so I didn’t have time to allay my concerns however the food was really average also. The iberico pork, described as “the best in the world” was oily and gristly and I couldn’t eat it. I asked for a doggy bag so it wouldn’t go to waste but again bizarre that the manager didn’t query why I had left nearly the entire dish.
I’ve been in two minds about posting this as this restaurant used to be one of my go to’s and I would often recommend however the whole experience has left...
Read moreMy husband and I met with our lovely family who were visiting from Canada. Service at The Duke's Umbrella was good and the quality of the food was also good - I wouldn't say exceptional. I was disappointed with the lack of vegetables with the main courses. Four of us had a starter and a main course each. Two of us had the fish and chips - £20 for a fairly small portion. The lobster bisque tartare sauce didn't taste any different to normal tartare sauce. Two of us had the whole plaice - £28 for a small fish. It had been prepared very well, and it arrived with some small shrimp in butter and a side of pink potatoes, simply boiled. No vegetables present on any dish. I ordered a side of glazed carrots. When you visit upmarket restaurants, it isn't uncommon for the menu to not state every item on the plate, just key items. I didn't say anything at the time because I couldn't fault the cookery on any of the dishes at all. My disappointment was with the value for money (which I'm not sure any of the staff could do anything about, and I didn't want to raise this with my family present). I definitely would expect a £20 fish and chips to have peas on the side.. and I would expect a £28 fish course to have...

I am not too keen on Sunday Roast, because every time I've had it, even at high rated places, it felt dry and dull. BUT! The lamb Sunday roast here changed my mind! The lovely lady who took our order suggested it specifically and I'm glad we listened to her. Also, that was the crunchiest most donut-y/loukoumades-y yorkshier pudding I've ever had!
We also had Haggis neeps & tatties and I must say I was impressed by the foamy light textrure of the turnip puree! All cooked to perfection and served in proper temperatures.
The staff were all relaxed and very welcoming. Combined with the modern industial-like, yet still traditional in places, decoration, great lighting not bright but not too dark, elements of the building showing through and revealing the old warehouse that it was a long time ago, according to what our server told us (extra points here), it felt comfortable and very pleasant to be there, especially for us that tend to be overwhelmed by loud busy places.
Thank you and we will come again next time we...
