Masquerades as an Aussie Pub but it hardly is. Fish and Chips with mashy peas is not an Australian dish. Parmi with beetroot slaw is not something I’ve ever come across with the hundreds of Parmas I’ve had in Melbourne. Burgers, would it hurt to have a classic, angus burger on the list, and where cheese isn’t an extra. Stayed for over an hour and not one Aussie artist song on the music. Don’t expect the AFL to be on or for them to even be able to get it, even if the games on foxtel back home. Menu is very British pallet orientated, I suppose they’re appealing to the majority, just wasn’t what I was expecting as an Aussie going into what I thought was a classic Aussie pub. This is a UK sport bar with a few Aussie flags around, don’t expect anything more.

Of all the bars in the city centre Walkabout was one I’d not been to in probably a decade. In my head I’d pictured a fairly studenty theme bar but my preconception was entirely wrong. It’s light, bright, spacious and nicely designed. Pints at £2.50 all day Monday to Thursdays were a welcome and hangover inducing surprise. Food menu was simple and well priced and there were loads of screens and areas to watch sports. Bonus points for ramp access for those less able, good music and decent toilets. Gutted I didn’t get to meet the infamous Nicola or Abbie but the barman was really friendly. Underrated pub I can heartily recommend

I was really looking forward to my visit to Walkabout having bought. a Virgin Experience Deal last year.

When I arrived I received a warm welcome and was shown to my pre-booked table ..

I used the gents toilet and noted a strong odour of stale urine, although the toilets appeared clean . Had I not prepaid for my meal , I may have left at that point.

A lovely young waitress provided me with menus and explained how to order food and bottomless drinks ( 6 only in Scotland ) during my two hour pre-booked stay. I double checked with her if I had booked that deal which she confirmed therefore I ordered a Long Island Ice Tea from the list of beers , wines and spirits.

I was shortly approached by a manager who advised that I'd been given the wrong menu , who then quickly cancelled my order for the cocktail .

I was advised that I could now only order from a very limited choice of Fosters Lager, Strongbow Cider, A sex on the beach cocktail , prosecco or a soft drink. Which was a rather disappointing selection of drinks.

During our 80 minute stay we ordered a Sex on the Beach which was bland and tasteless ... We then ordered a Cider, followed by a prosecco and a draft coke zero. 4 drinks in total from our potential of 8 available drinks off the menu.

I ordered two plates of wings and fries with BBQ and Hot Sauce. The process was quite annoying given that the female manager whist taking our order spoke to a waiter on two occasions completely ignoring me.

The wings were nice and the male Waiter who served us was attentive and helpful. We decide that we honestly didn't want to spend too much time in Walkabout and after my friend mentioned that the female toilets were stinking and she could allegedly hear several girls 'sniffing' in the cubicles.

I asked for the food to be boxed and we left the venue.

Overall , a very disappointing afternoon. The bar does seem popular with a younger clientele . I won't be returning. The smell from the toilets and the fact the female manager chose to ignore me whilst I was ordering my food really put me off.

It wasn't worth the money I spent on the Virgin Experience and it also spoiled a day planned with a friend.

I have reported my concerns to Virgin Experiences to highlight my disappointment.

I've now read the 70 plus negative one star reviews which outnumber the positive reviews for this establishment.

However the management continuously post AI generated responses advising they are always seeking to improve their service.

Save your money and...

I am normally quite a regular here with my work colleagues seeing as we also work in hospitality and have always had a great experience here! I happened to come in on a random afternoon with my partner before going to the cinema around the corner. Upon arrival I went up to the bar to order a beer and a Redbull to which I was not asked for ID from the member of staff, nor was there anyone on the door to ask us for ID when we arrived - just for reference. We sat for an hour with no issues, and then when I went up to order food and a second beer the woman on the bar had asked for my ID. I provided it and then she asked if my partner had any - now he did not and I did argue saying that my partner was 29 but he just didn’t have ID to which we were then refused service and rather rudely told that ‘technically’ we should leave the establishment as it’s an 18+ bar. Obviously we left but it’s such a shame that the woman who was on the bar felt the need to be rude and dismissive. I understand the rules however if you’re going to enforce them it should be consistently and not just when staff members pick and choose… It’s just such a shame because my work colleagues regularly use this place as a pre-night out drinking spot…we’ve rarely ever had any...

Had to provide an amended review due to my past visits in the past couple of months. As before, a major gripe is that this is an Aussie themed bar with NO AUSTRALIAN BEERS. (and Fosters isn't Australian) Thats like an Irish bar with no Guinness or Jameson's. Australia day(26th January) celebrations, which years ago where awesome are now non existent or replaced by important events, like wrestling!!! On the staffing side, it's taken ages to get served even when it's not busy, and staff can sometimes be more interested chatting to colleagues, rude and sometime all stick to one end of the(lengthy) bar and leave a lot of people waiting at the areas no being paid attention to. Also, the hustlers(concierge) guys in the toilets are rude and aggressive if you don't give them money, even if you don't use anything they have on offer. Used to be a good place a few years back but been on the slide for the past few years. Haven't eaten as reviews, word of mouth and seeing some of the culinary offerings have been totally off-putting. Used to go in, mainly for rugby but likely to be changing location soon. Such a shame that a formally great place...
