They left my girlfriend shivering for an hour on Valentine’s day and the waitress was rude about moving us despite empty tables next to us. Terrible service.
I came here with my girlfriend for Valentine’s day after making a reservation for around 9. After we were sat down in a dark corner by the window, we quickly realised how cold it was next to the large windows without any heating. The wooden counters by the windowsill were icy-to-the-touch and I could feel the cold table through my shirt. That doesn’t compare to my girlfriend, who wearing a sleeveless dress, was absolutely freezing and at-times literally shivering.
I asked the waitress if there were any other tables we could be sat at or if we could be moved when some customers left. The waitress told me that normally they have a heater on the two tables by the window, but the other couple next to the window (wearing fleece/jumper) asked them to turn it off. That when they left they’d turn the heater back on for us, and that she was sorry but “today is a no requests day”.
After about 20 minutes of us sat in Arctic conditions, a large table of 6 vacated next to us, so I asked the waitress if another table of 6 would be coming in or if it’s free (currently 9:30pm) as we were still very cold. She said she didn’t think another table would be coming in but if we wait they’ll put the heaters on when the other couple leave so we won’t have to move, but i asked her could they just move us to that table since we were cold now, at which point she snapped at me “No.” and turned around and started walking away. I had to exclaim to get her to come back and actually answer why we couldn’t be moved to an empty table when we were currently sat freezing on a table they recognise needs heating, but wasn’t being heated, to which she said she would speak to her manager.
It’s so disrespectful to get snipped at like that when all I was asking for was a warmer location for my girlfriend who was literally shivering during her Valentine’s day dinner, a meal we’d been excited about for days. From that one singular experience, I will never come back to this restaurant.
I was so upset I was thinking about leaving right there and then, speaking to the manager about the poor experience and not paying for the rest of the meals and only the starters (set menu), but of course i couldn’t do that to my girlfriend on Valentine’s day.
Our waitress wasn’t coming back to update us, so I asked another waitress at 9:45 the same question: “Do you think another party are coming in to use that table?” “No.” “Would it be possible for us to move to that table as it is really cold by the window?““We’ll need to get that cleared up but let me just check with my manager, that should be okay.”
And then 10 minutes later they were clearing it up and moving us over before our mains. Was that so difficult? Was it really so troubling to have to move a paying customer from a freezing table to one that is warm?
It’s worth mentioning that the couple who asked for the heater to be turned off, left at 10:40. So if we listened to the initial waitress’ request to “wait for them to leave” we would’ve been sat experiencing winter for about 1 and a half hours.
How are the service staff not more embarrassed about sitting a woman in a sleeveless dress down at a table they know will be freezing cold? It’s appalling.
I’m not even going to talk about the food. To put it simply, the food was let down by...
Read moreMy wife and I had been recommended Browns by a work colleague.
When we first came into Browns, it took 3 minutes for someone to notice us waiting to be seated at the front desk (with a reservation). It’s not the end of the world but still is one star taken off of service as I don’t expect to be waiting more than a minute to be noticed at the front desk of a restaurant of this calibre.
Onto the food: For starters my wife had the Garlic Prawns & Chorizo while I had the Devonshire Crab Crumpet with Avocado. The assortment served with the crumpet was very Yummy. My wife also enjoyed her prawns, although she didn’t like the hard bread served with them, but that’s more a matter of personal taste as I enjoyed the bread myself.
For mains, my wife had the Roast Cod with Garlic & Asparagus, while I had the 10oz Ribeye with Bordelaise sauce and fries. I asked the waitress if it was possible to exchange my fries for the Parmesan & Truffle thick-cut chips, which she said was fine with a £1 extra charge which I was more than happy with.
Unfortunately, when the Ribeye arrived, it was just served with the seasoned fries! Now, I’m not one to make a big fuss or send anything back so I carried on with the fries, but it would amiss not to mention this in the review. That said the Ribeye was so good, I barely even thought about the chips!! It was cooked to perfection; absolutely spot-on rare, just as I like it. The Bordelaise sauce complemented the steak so well. Extremely Yummy!! I haven’t had a good steak like that in a while.
My wife enjoyed her cod throughly, she thought the asparagus was a good complement as well. She liked the Ribeye a lot too, but preferred her cod even more.
We didn’t go for desserts, cause we were a bit full, but food as a whole was pretty great. I would have given it 5 stars, but the fries with the steak were a bit of a let downs. They were kind-of warm when the food arrived, in my opinion they should be hot, and if they were the parmesan and truffle-cut chips i’m sure I would have liked them a lot more.
The atmosphere was pretty nice, it’s got a quite swanky feeling to it, maybe a little art deco-ey. Not many empty tables, and the clientele weren’t too loud & rambunctious. I would have given 5 stars for service, but personally I like a little bit of music. I think this place would be good with some quiet background jazz, nothing too obnoxious or loud, just something to blend into the background a bit.
When we were getting the bill it still had the additional £1 for the Parmesan & Truffle Chips, which I had to have taken off, not because I needed that £1, just as a sort-of matter of principle. But I would feel neglectful not to mention that, with the mix-up overall my experience with the service was still a positive one because our waitress was very warm and nice to us. I’ve had a few cold waiters/waitresses lately so it was a nice change to be served with a smile and warm demeanour.
As a whole, 4 stars. I’d like to come back again at some point (to see what other great food they have to offer!) but i’m not...
Read moreThis was my post graduation meal as the restaurant was aware of this is shocking. Slow service, forgot drinks, only saw two servers for the whole restaurant. blamed our drinks for taking so long (30 mins) on 1 cocktail in the order which is literally 3 ingredients and has to be stirred and that's it, really that's a joke. They did accommodate us about half an hour early and the staff were really nice that served us, and the food was nice when it came, but our meal ended up taking us 2 and a half hours and we all only had a main. it wasn't busy in the restaurant either and i had heard really great things about this place. i left feeling disappointed really my meal was alright it wasn't exceptional and the wait time really ruined it. if we had all ordered cocktails fair enough but we had 2 beers 2 wines a soda and 1 cocktail that shouldn't take even 1 person 10 minutes to prepare really come on. I wouldn't return and i don't think id recommend this place unless people don't mind waiting. the décor was nice though and again servers nice too but excuses after the other and our drinks were left on the table opposite and no one told the servers so they were sat waiting as well, very unprofessional and unorganised. we only got the drinks after a party member spotted them. for a meal that was around 200 pounds im very unimpressed. had to wait at the door for 10 minutes as well as no one bothered to come over and multiple staff saw a party of 6 waiting. had two items unavailable and no one mentioned until party members wanted to order it. not professional at all and if your wondering why i didn't say anything, a party member paid for the meal as a surprise, if they had come to the table i would have said something. No one said goodbye or anything at the end and my dad asked for tap water for the table and we got given bottled water when the table opposite had tap water? he asked why we had bottled when he asked for tap and she said they cant give tap water only bottled company policy but someone literally had tap water? such a shame to end my day on this really not impressed. wouldn't recommend for celebrations or anything like that or if you have a bigger...
