First a word of warning, eating here will very likely spoil other curry houses for you. I now find the garbage peddled at most curry houses flavorless in-distinctive slop. Sometimes it is sweet and creamy slop, sometimes spicy slop, but still has no flavour.
At Karma, every dish I have tried is distinctive, vibrant, the flavours are fresh and the quality of the meat is first class. Most of the menu is dishes you don't get elsewhere and it is these specials that offer some of the best tastes I have ever had in a curry. If you like corriander, the chicken dish with corriander seeds is to die for. There is also less choice, a benefit as that is how they can keep everything fresh and made to order.
The prices all include a rice matched to the curry, for instance a lemon pilau with the corriander chicken. They are probably £2 more than other curry houses in the area and the portions are a little smaller. I struggle to eat what most curry houses class as one portion of starter, main and a side so this does not bother me, but skinflint fatties might not be so keen. The quality difference is a hundred times more important to me. The drinks are reasonable and the bill at the end is generally favourable compared to most other restaurants in the area.
The service is friendly and attentive without being too in your face. Smiling staff who are knowledgeable about the food and leave you to your dinner are fine by me. The interior is slick and attractive too.
Go forth and enjoy the only curry house that I have been to can honestly be called...
Read moreWe were in the Wirral over the weekend for a house-warming party. The following night, eleven of us went here.
Being used to Bengali/Punjabi cuisine, I selected the Railway chicken, based solely on the description of the ingredients. It was underwhelming to say the least: runny sauce; the meat hadn't been marinated; heavy on turmeric powder; zero fresh coriander, and a small serving ( a blessing, I guess). Their "yellow rice" (not pilau) was boiled rice with turmeric stirred in for colour: it wasn't even basmati.
They served their poppadoms as if they were nachos, with sauces and and other wet accompaniments piled on top, so that the crispness was completely compromised. It's the first time I've seen poppadoms eaten with a knife and fork.
Service was chaotic, with some folk having nearly finished their meal before others had been served, and my rice was delivered to the table five minutes after my main course.
The bill was quite hefty, at nearly £400 for the whole party.
If it wasn't for the fresh, modern décor and pleasantness of the serving staff, I would have given this...
Read moreWe booked a table for Diwali, basically I’d forgotten it was Diwali and the wife wasn’t happy . She’s from Delhi, probably the Indian food capital. So food is always a win!. Having read the reviews, I thought I was going to be in trouble! No probs, I’ll try the, “well it’s not like India” bit. We go in, it a lovely place, nice modern interpretation, ie no flock wallpaper.. Turns out they do draught king fisher, well I’ll have at least one nice memory. Hold on they do a non alcoholic drinks menu, the wife loved hers! We order, life was good, I’ve had a good innings. Then what is this, the most authentic Indian food I’ve tasted in ages! The flavours aren’t masked by excessive chilli, just tasty tasty food. I look over table, she’s happy, there is a god. Ok I might have extended this a bit, but the food here is excellent and more importantly authentic. We’re...
