I have arrived in Wolverhampton and my first stop was the Great Western. I have never been to this pub before, but many say it is the best pub in the city and I can see why. They have a nice selection of Black Country Ales, mostly Holden's because it is one of their pubs. However, I am started first with a Bathams Bitter, but had the Holden's Mild next, which I enjoyed more. Sadly, I don't think Bathams is as good as it used to be, and this was no fault of the Great Western. I make that comment even after recently drinking it at the brewery tap.
The pub has good reasonably priced proper pub food. I went for the faggots, but couldn't decide on chips or mash, so I was grateful that I was allowed me to have half and half, knowing that in the past a different Black Country pub offered half rice and half chips with their curry. Black Country faggots are the real deal. You will never go back to frozen Brains faggots đ
The pub is handy for the railway station and they have a large car park next door. They even have a screen in the corner of one room which shows the live train departure times, which must be useful for train traveller. There are several rooms, including a large conservatory at the back.
The Great Western is very friendly and welcoming, including to dogs.
My meal and pint was ÂŁ14.75, both very enjoyable.
Definitely recommended for both the excellent food, especially the proper Black Country faggots, and for a great selection of ales. The cobs also looked very nice, but having just eaten a...

We were greeted at the door by a bouncer who asked what football team we supported as it was "home fans only", this is apparently a theme in the City.
As we were opposition fans we blindsided him by simply not answering and following in some Wolves supporters who had shown us the way to the pub.
I fear the system they operate is not fool proof.
Quite why you'd want to exclude decent paying customers is baffling, it gives a terrible impression of not only the premises but the place itself, as a Brexity one horse town, "Local pubs for local people".
Inside the pub was canny enough, quite a few Newcastle United supporters in there I knew, all of whom were perfectly well behaved and put plenty of money behind the bar. They were significantly better dressed than the locals, who were going for the middle aged/elderly men in official replica kits/sportswear look. Probably the attire to be clapping along to goal music to be perfectly honest.
To it's credit the pub served a decent pint and the staff were absolutely lovely.
If the ludicrous "Home fans only" pretence was dropped in this town and venue then I would have...
Read moreThe prices here are very very very inconsistent. Us as a 6 some ordered the same 3 rounds more or less (with the exception of a packet of crisps or a cob) with prices ranging from £28 to £38. When challenging this and asking for an itemised bill it was met with complete and utter arrogance and a how dare you question us attitude. We were not the only one's so it appears to question the consistency of the bill. Another customer was also challenging when ordering another round. We chose to stay due to a match being on. With all the years of visiting this pub and enjoying the pub for what it is..... a classic GWR Pub(despite it being painted white on a renovate project on the inside) I've never felt so ripped off. It's either they're out to rip people off. Or the staff don't know what they're doing. Or it could be a far more sinister move in both staff and pub are out to take advantage of people. It's a shame to see such a pub fall into a shadow of its former self. Bring back the old owner/manager/staff!!!!
For shame THE GREAT WESTERN...
