I have had a handful of steaks around the Philly area, and getting CLOSE to a true Philly cheesesteak is not an easy feat. Nontheless, I always judge a cheesesteak based on Philly standards.
I got my personal favorite style for takeout: a south Philly-style whiz wit with a side of small fries.
The fries were fantastic! They were very crispy, yet hot, fresh, and soft on the inside. Somehow, they made the ride home that way! Well done Philly Steaks on the fries!
The whiz wit wasn't bad. The meat was hot, kind of juicy, and they supplied enough whiz on the side for me to coat the meat with it. I enjoyed eating it, but there is a lot of room for improvement.
First, while I understand Sarcone's bakery isn't going to be around the corner, the bread could me more than grocery store quality. If it was baked fresh every day by a local bakery, then it would be a step in the right direction.
Second, (and something FAR easier they could do) the steak meat DESPERATELY needs more seasoning and sauce! I know I am eating a masterclass cheesesteak when I can smell it on my fingers hours after I eat it. The whiz wit I got at Philly Steaks barely left a mark at all!
And if I am paying over $20 (including tip) for a 12" cheesesteak with a small order of fries, I expect it to take me back in time. It did not do that. It was just solid enough to satisfy me and to earn a generous 4 star rating thanks to...
Read moreOrdered over the phone and was told the food would be ready in about 10 minutes. It was. Walked in and was greeted with a good hello and how can we help you. Though walking in was walking in a cloud of smoke, it did not feel too good. And was hard to breathe or see. I think their vents weren't working. Paid for my food, which was affordable. Craby fries were on point. But on my PhillySteak, I asked for extra cheese-wiz and didn't really get any cheese-wiz made it dry. I also ordered a ham sandwich, and that was very dry as well. I think they didn't hear my order at all because of cluttering with the spatchulas clinking in the background. Which leaves me to wonder. I lived in Philadelphia and went to Gino's famous Philly Cheesesteak, and I didn't hear ALL that clutter or clacking of the spatulas. They put the meat on the grill, and you could hear the sizzle and see all the juices marinating, and ohhh, the smell went straight to your nose. As the wonderful bread got its golden crust and I didn't have to ask for any extra cheese-wiz or anything. But yea maybe when you try this place, you can tell me your...
Read moreBeen seeing this place for years and have always wanted to try it and I’m glad I did, but only because I know I’ll never have that desire when I drive by again!
I was severely underwhelmed and disapointed with the sandwich. I got the Philly cheesesteak with cheese whiz because it’s site recommended it. My gf got the chicken one whatever it is called.
Both sandwiches were horribly dry and soooooooooo lacking in flavor. I dunno if it was a one off time or they just refuse to season but it was so bland. The sandwich has the tiniest squirt of cheese hiding in one corner of the sandwich.
The chicken sandwich was even worse. There was really just no redeeming quality to these sandwiches whatsoever.
The green Chile cheese fries were better than the sandwich but that wasn’t much a competition and they were nothing to write home about either. They just stood out in comparison.
Literally my first food review ever. I was that disappointed.
Permanent pass for me.
People were nice at least so...
