Captain D's — Restaurant in Alton

On the evening of Feb 21, approx. 630pm, My wife and I were at this location and witnessed the worst handling of a customer complaint I have ever seen. The customer was in line ahead of us and, from what I could hear, got home with her order and the food was cold. She claimed that she had waited for 15 minutes, while her food sat on the counter before being checked out. I knew the manager was upset, just from her body language, but when the customer got to the counter, it was immediate chaos. The manager did nothing to calm the customer down, was very disparaging and condescending and only escalated the conflict. Finally the manager asked, "well what do you want me to do about it?" and the customer asked that the food order be replaced. The manager then wanted to see all the "cold food" and the customer stated that no one had told her to bring it. The manager then verbally jumped on the customer, telling her there was nothing she could do about it without the food. At this point my wife (and others around us) were getting very uncomfortable. My wife asked if we could go somewhere else and we left. Others left as well. It will be a long time (if ever) before we will go back to that location. Something happened that upset a customer and instead of trying to repair the problem to restore the relationship, the manager intentionally only made it worse. Was the food cost of replacing her meal worth losing at least...

So the food was good it was hot. The service was ok. The dining room however was gross. The tables had crumbs on them the booths had crumbs on them. It looked like it had been sitting there for a while. I tried finding a clean booth to eat & none were clean. I asked the cashier for a rag to wipe down the table & booth myself, but he came out & wiped it down left it wet. So me & my Husband basically got paper towels & wiped the water off. The seats are ripped & need to be taped or replaced. The floors were greasy & sticky I felt like I was going to fall. This place would be a 4 star for me if they just do the basics with some soap & water. I'm glad I didn't have to use the bathroom because if the dinning room was gross I can only imagine what the bathroom looks like. I almost turned around & left, but I had to be somewhere & hadn't eaten all day. They were very slow there was only one customer there when we walked in around 6p.m. so I could understand if it was super busy, it wasn't. I am discouraged to eat in fast food places less & less going to start cooking at home more. The service isn't great anymore especially...

For some odd reason, I am a fan of Fried Clam Strips. I don't know how I got hooked on them, but when I see them on a menu, I gotta have them. Lucky for me, you don't see them offered at that many places.

I drive by this Captain D's everyday. It's hard for me to go anywhere without passing by. It never occurred to me, that they'd have Fried Clams. Then one day as I was driving by, there it was on their marquee, "Fried Clams". I was domed, it was lunchtime, so I pulled into the parking lot.

When I got inside, I saw a sign offering clams only as a side. I asked the young man working the counter if they had it as a meal. He replied, "yes". So, I ordered a combo with fries and slaw. It also came with, two Hush Puppies.

It satisfied my clam strip craving, but it was rather flavorless. The Hush Puppies had the best flavor of all the items and the Cole Slaw was totally bland. If I return, I think I'll just order their fish fillets.
