Sunday nights can be a difficult time to dine in Amarillo, because it is around 3pm that the city becomes practically a food desert. It’s mostly the big chains that remain open; the Mom and Pop joints turn off the lights and don’t return until Tuesday.
But I was elated to find My Thai open one recent Sunday evening. I had narrowed my search to “Thai food near me,” and this was the only Asian-ish place open among the search results. It had been many years since I had been, primarily because I don’t find myself in that part of town often, but I was hungry.
I was quickly impressed by how much takeaway business they do, which may very well be part of the Sunday factor. They had a 6-foot table set up with bagged orders waiting for customers to arrive. That said, there were still easily a dozen tables occupied for in-house dining. The menu is actually rather short and compact for a Thai place, where I routine expect six to eight pages of curries, Pad this-and-that, and so forth. I quickly spied Pad See Ew (which they spell phonetically, Pad Ci-U, and ordered it with tofu. From order time to plate on my table, only 10 minutes elapsed, not bad for a place that was easily serving more meals to go than for dine-in.
The food was delicious, the price very affordable, and the serving size abundant. I left feeling just fine…not hungry, not stuffed. If I had to make a suggestion, it would be to include tofu as a protein option for many of the other items they list. Asian food is for the most part very scalable; it’s easy to sub one thing for another, and tofu for chicken in a yellow curry is no big stretch. Perhaps they would do this upon request (which I don’t know), but it would be nice for non-carnivorous patrons to know they have more choices than what appear.
Overall, a great dining experience, one I hope to...
Read moreI really like this place. Their split hours are sometimes hard to fit into my schedule but they have a couple of favorite foods that I like. My absolute favorite is the chicken curry soup. It's so huge I can never finish it. They give you a side of rice with it also which really tastes good and if you need more rice they will bring you a second plate. Their lunch prices and combos are excellent although I rarely get there early enough to try them. I had the garlic chicken once and it was so good. The pork chop was also. I wasn't super impressed with the Satay compared to what I've had in the past so I probably won't get it again. The last time I was there I splurged and got the wontons with pork sausage as an appetizer. You got a dozen for $5 which was excellent and they were so light and crispy and good flavored. They reminded me of a Chinese place I used to go to in San Diego during college that had wonderful won tons also. I wish I had the recipe for that sweet and sour sauce they give you with them. It was really good. I think I got the pad thai once and it was sort of average, not as good as I was hoping but I'm sure that's just a matter of taste. Probably wherever you first tasted the Pad Thai and liked it is what you want it to taste like at every place you go to after that. I heard it was one of my brother's favorites. The last time I was there I got the Panay and it was really good. I definitely want to go back for that sometime. I just wish it had something green with it like broccoli. Once when I had a bad cold I came in here because there are no Jewish delis in town to get chicken soup. I got a big bowl of their chicken rice soup. It definitely did the job to make me feel better. I recommend this place to others for reasonable prices...
Read moreMy wife and I came in because they used to have some pretty decent fried rice and they have amazing egg rolls. Got the egg rolls which were indeed amazing, and I ordered the sweet and sour chicken with fried rice. When it came out, the fried rice didnt look like fried rice. I tried it. And it was just steamed rice with one clump of egg thrown on top. I brought it to the attention of the server, and he took it back to the kitchen. When it was returned to me, it was the same pile of steamed rice that looked as if it was doused in soy sauce and thrown in a pan that was too hot. It didnt gain any flavor by it getting sent back, however it did taste burnt, and wasnt worth eating. The server, Steven, was very helpful and offered to have it fixed, as it was another worker who had brought me the burnt rice, but I was content with just eating the sweet and sour chicken and respectfully declined. The server was really down to earth and not only communicated well, but made sure drinks stayed full and we had a good experience. Although I'm very critical on wait staff, he exceeded expectations and honestly made up for the less than par food from the kitchen. I'd recommend having Steven R. as a server but ask they make actual fried...
