I am a lifelong resident here in the Pioneer Valley, when iya sushi first showed up in this area I thought it was pretty good. Since then, many things have gone downhill. I would come regularly with my family of four, friends, and coworkers. I always tipped them well, 20-25% . since then the portions have shrank, the same exact things cost more and you get less. Also the “lunch specials “ were very misleading, if you got the three roll lunch special , it would often cost more than ordering them separately, I pointed it out on several occasions, and they did not change it, and they acted like they didn’t know about it. A bit of trickery. Another point of contention, They should not offer to-go . When I ate in, I always got the food very fast. The last several times I purchased to-go food it took 45-55 minutes . You might think, maybe they were busy, but no , each time not very many patrons eating inside. The last time I ordered takeout I was told it would take 40 minutes. I went into the restaurant 25 minutes later and the worker told me I called just 10 minutes earlier and it would take a lot more time. I showed the worker the call from my iPhone, which clearly showed I called the number 25 minutes earlier… she said ohh. There were at least 5 people working at that time, and only a couple people in the restaurant eating already. They had not started my order and most workers were not doing anything, taking to each other , etc. I saw patrons come in and get their food before my take order from 45 minutes earlier…. Special. Maybe just don’t do take out? Also The attitude many of the workers seemed arrogant and a bit rude. Just don’t do to go if you can’t handle it, but I will still never come back with...
Read moreI live in the area and found out about Iya at the beginning of this past October. Since then, I have ordered takeout from Iya and eaten at Iya several times. This japanese restaurant is an amazing addition to downtown Amherst. At times it can be busy, but only because it is an experience loved by many. It is always very clean and they are taking many steps to stop the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The servers and other staff are very amiable and attentive. You can tell they are familiar with the menu as they often give recommendations. Every time I’ve been, the food has been out of this world. The sushi is always fresh and well-made. Not to mention that their specialty rolls are creative and delicious. This past time I got the Cannonball Roll. This roll was shrimp tempura and cucumber topped with seared beef, garlic ricotta, garlic eel sauce, scallions, and spicy garlic mayo. It was a little pricey at $16.00, but well worth the cost. They do have cheaper sushi rolls as well and even if you don’t like sushi, they have many other delicious menu items to choose from. I would highly recommend checking out Iya either in Amherst or their other location in...
Read moreNice Asian restaurant with a good selection of food options. Ramen is Japanese style, so taste is more savory rather than salty. Added spice to my Classic Tokyo ramen (additional $1), looked like a chili oil addition to make it spicier. Between my ramen and my girlfriend's Vegetable Ramen, the amount of broth differed by a lot. Not sure if this was intentional based on the type of ramen. My girlfriend's ramen was also missing her egg. We thought it was "alright", not amazing but definitely better than other ramens in the area.
Besides the ramen, get the pork belly bao! For $6 it's a good deal for a great little bao sandwich. Soft bun texture with a nice seared pork belly cutlet and a mild spicy sauce. Worth trying as a side to share with a friend.
We got the Spicy Sushi Combo which came with the spicy tuna, salmon, and shrimp rolls (end up saving $3 compared to if you ordered all of them separate). Pretty standard sushi rolls with a spicy mayo drizzled on top. Probably would have liked to try a specialty roll instead for a more diverse flavor experience,...
