The food was excellent and the vibe was fun. The service was... odd.
There was no one working the bar when I got there to wait for my wife. I did eventually get a beer, but the nice guy who served me seemed a bit nervous because it wasn't his job... but I appreciate him stepping up. (Not sure I got charged for that beer... I mentioned it when we were seated, but forgot to check the check later.)
Th host tried to seat us across from the bus station instead of any of the many open booths and tables (it was 5pm, beginning of dinner service). We asked to sit by a window, and she put us next to a large, loud group of 14 or so.
Everyone else got roti and dip plates when they sat.
Our waiter was very quiet at first but warmed up as the meal progressed.
I ordered a second beer and our waiter handed it to another waitress, who looked at our table, and then sat it down at the afore mentioned bus station. Our waiter eventually spotted it, but had to track down the other waitress to verify it was indeed intended for me.
It was odd.
Our waiter gave himself a 20% when he presented the check on the POS. My wife was going to give him 25%, cause he did warm up and we warmed up to him.
Again, odd.
And that's the thing... Service wasn't bad, just odd.
Like I said the food was great. The seasoning on the samosas was amazing. For entrees we ordered some standards, tikka masala and vindaloo (huge, yummy pieces of lamb)... our barometers when trying new places. We're looking forward to branching out to some of their specialties and street foods next time.
Ultimately, we're happy to have what seems like a viable and what seems to be successful restaurant...
Read moreOMG I have found my new favorite Indian restaurant! I had been wanting to try it since they opened up in the former Stueben’s place, and today was lucky enough to have the opportunity.
From the moment my companion first sipped the Masala Chai, we knew we were in for something special. They truly live up to their name as you could tell that not only were the spices complex and perfectly balanced, but that they have taken the time select premium quality spices. It’s one of the things that sets them apart.
We had a lunch Thali each, which highlighted another thing that sets them apart— an expanded memu that goes beyond the common dishes you see at every Indian place (although they offer those as well). It started with a lively Samosa Chat, included a warm Dahl soup, a delicious potatoes street food dish, naan bread, and a perfect desert portion. For the entree selection I had the Green Bean Alu and my companion had the Channa Masala. Both were excellent. I wanted to eat more just because it was so good but we were full with plenty left over for later that evening.
The service went above and beyond, attentive without ever being too much. They were patient and helpful with our questions and the extra time we needed because the menu was so amazing we wanted to order everything! The food came out quickly and its presentation was a work of art. Right after we started in our meal, one of the managers also came over to give us a sample of another dish as well! Everyone was so friendly, we couldn’t help but leave with a smile on our faces.
Go there. You won’t be...
Read moreHad a phenomenal experience the other night at Spice Room! Went to dinner with a friend and experienced very attentive but not intrusive service. Had multiple people on staff touch our table, and was impressed by all of our interactions.
The food we ordered was out of this world delicious! The pani puri were expertly crafted and didn't sacrifice flavor for instagram-worthy presentation. I ordered one of the dosas, which was massive and super tasty. I'm still dreaming of the crispy exterior and great combo of accompanying chutneys. My friend ordered the paneer tikka masala, and we loved both dishes. Our side of onion kulcha was top-notch as well.
(We also loved the plate of papadams and chutneys/sauces that we were served to begin with, it was a lovely touch).
The vibe inside the restaurant was fantastic--you can tell that it used to be an old-school diner, but the Spice Room has put their own spin on the decor that makes it feel unique and purposely curated. The restaurant was buzzing with customers on a Wednesday night that gave a lively vibe, but the service was always excellent and our waters were always full.
I also like to give bonus points to restaurants like the Spice Room that have switched over to hand-held POS systems. It shows they are paying attention to the way the market is heading, and I appreciate being able to tap my credit card at the table instead of having it whisked away and carried around the restaurant.
Overall, this was a great experience and I can't wait to visit the other Spice...
