When you step into MELA, one of Ashville's largest Indian Restaurants since 2017, you step into an expansive open air atmosphere. At the very start of a Monday dinner service, it first feels like walking into a peaceful Indian Oasis. The menu is nearly American Indian because the food here is so approachable even a fussy kid can enjoy it. Some roti to start. Playful to break apart: light, crispy & crunchy with bits of fennel layered within. I chose the Madras Vegetables for my main course - Fresh Vegetables cooked in a mild coconut & curry leaf gravy. ($16) It's almost hard to believe this dish is vegan, because it's SO rich, buttery & savory with a bright tumeric taste. So buttery for a not butter dish. Warming & comforting, stick to the ribs kinda meal. Would be ideal to eat on a chilly Fall or Winter's night! The small green cury leaves throughout made this dish feel elegant, innovative & fresh! Served with a small yellow lentil dahl. The star anise in the white rice provides a cozy unique twist on a staple. 🥦🥕🥒 To drink, I ordered the Lotus. Bright, vibrant fuschia hues of housemade blueberry & ginger St. Germain swirl together in a coupe glass with a boozy Luksusowa Vodka grounding the palate. 🍋🫐 I look forward to grabbing another cocktail from the menu soon. They also have a full and extensive bar so no matter what floats your boat ⛵ you're sure to find it. A young and friendly staff keep this restaurant buzzing while hot dishes hit the tables of couples and families. I had the chance to meet the hardworking and industrious owner who said the cooking styles here had an influence from his mother and sisters cooking which can be so different from each other. If variety is the spice of life; MELA is the rich Indian Comfort Food! ☺️ I'll be back! 🙌

Visited the place with family on week of 9/23. Located in downtown Asheville this place has nice ambiance and service. We were seated at the rear end of the restaurant which was fine but there was this track light above our table which would flicker constantly, which was very annoying. We started off with beer which wasn't great or worth the price. Moving on we ordered the specials Chicken Saffron Kabab which was nicely cooked but tasted so plain without any kind of real Indian spices or taste. Kebab was served with some sort of sweet mango pickle and black daal instead of traditional mint and tamarind chutney dips. We also ordered Vegetarian Thali which I think was the best item in all other items that we ordered. This place doesn't have authentic Indian food taste that you would expect for a real Indian restaurant. I am from Mumbai and I have been to many Indian restaurant in United States and this will not be the one that I would recommend if you are looking to have genuine Indian taste. Service was the best thing about this restaurant and waitress was super friendly. Cleanliness - 4 Service - 5 Food - 2 Location - 4 Menu Options - 2 Ambiance - 3.5 Overall - 2/5

I am a huge fan of Indian cuisine, curry dishes in particular, and while I have visited dozens of Indian restaurants all-throughout the US (and even a couple in Canada), Mela Indian Restaurant in Asheville is by far my favorite. I have had it twice now in one year, last night being the most recent meal, and it was just as delicious and memorable as the first visit. Their CTM is second-to-none, and the Kerala Fish Curry was pure decadence. Both rich with flavor, creamy, indulgent and comforting. The Korma is splendid as well. Their gravies are so good you could drink it from a glass, and the meat morsels melt-in-your-mouth. Truly a transcendental dining experience. On top of that, the atmosphere is warm, modern and inviting, and the service has been nothing short of great (for both visits). I highly, HIGHLY recommend giving Mela a try the next time that you are in Asheville! You will NOT be disappointed. My recommendations: Appetizer: Punjabi Pakoras Entrée: Chicken Tikka Masala or Kerala Fish Curry Drink: Taj Mahal during dinner and a Mango Lassi to-go

It's my last week in Asheville, so I had to hit up @mela.asheville yet again. I'm so excited to be back at downtown's OG Indian Restaurant & try something new. Although it's just a Monday, it's still pretty busy! To go orders fly out into the night.

I wanted to try it all, so I ordered the Vegetarian Thali Platter (100% Vegan) & to drink, the Sassi Lassi.

Stoli Vanilla shines through this inventive take on a Mango Lassi. The perfect drink to calm a hot tongue if you're a spice whimp.

I'm blown away by the entre presentation! For a culinary explorer, like me, this is an exciting map of taste opportunity just waiting to be unearthed.

First, I dip my hot garlic nann bread into the rich Baingan Bharta (tandoor roasted eggplant, tomato & fresh green peas) Mildly spicy, a dash sweet & incredibly comforting on a chilly night.

The Punjabi Chloe is a rich, complex chickpea dish & I just want to get lost in it... mmm...

The Lentil Dal is vibrant, souplike & light. Mela has a very special & unique way of packing tons of spice & fresh herb into everything without overwhelming any dish with heat or superfluous flavors.

The Bhindi Masala... wow!

This is my first Bhindi Masala ever. A popular indian dish with Okra, Tomatoes, Onions & Spices. After my swim today, I feel like I'm loading up on my healthy plants & complex proteins.

I keep finding myself actually W.O.L! Literally saying "wow" out. loud!

That culinary journalism study in college is really paying off with each & every bite here. The whole platter makes me feel like a kid who gets to play with his food.

In the center of the plate lies achar, a bright, spicy, hot vinegar-tinged vindaloo of pickled carrots & jalapeno.

I would recommend Mela to any culinary explorer but especially if you like Indian food. Thanks to the entire staff for a wonderful experience!

Fun Fact: The bar is...

Pathetic food ! Don’t go there. We called in to ask for table for 11 people. They said they can’t book a table initially as it’s a big crowd . We mentioned we have little kids and were driving straight there. They agreed that they can get us a table after 30 minutes. When we reached, we were told there was a miscommunication and they can’t give us a table. The only option was to order food for a take away and it in our car in the parking lot across the street. We ordered Butter naan. We were told they don’t do butter naan. They said they can only do plain naan. We ordered Garlic naan and they had it on the menu. We ordered chicken tandoori, chicken kebab , mattar paneer , mela special chicken curry , some kozhi gravy. We asked everything to made medium spice. There was one friendly staff who understood that we need lots of to go boxes and gave us a sufficient for 7 adults and 4 kids. They called us and said the food was ready to be picked and they had to add mandatory gratuity as it exceeded $100. I don’t know if this is correct. With the hunger , we didn’t argue more . We picked food.

Then came the real surprise! The tandoori was ok ! Naans were a rubbery and not able to be torn up ! The curries, not a single one had any salt / masala . The food was not having any aroma , any texture . It was as if we were having some uncooked tomato chutney which had big pieces of semi cooked chicken. None of us liked any of it. We literally had to waste so much food. It was late and we had to drive more and we decided to start without going back to the place and yelling for the worst food they have cooked.

I don’t know how this place is located in the downtown of Ashville and has gotten 4.2 stars ! Please do not go there if you would have some love for Indian food! What they serve is not Indian food .

I would not recommend this to...
