My wife and I went to the Luna Cafe for dinner last night, Saturday, March 24, 2018. It wasn't very busy when we arrived at 5:30 pm. My wife ordered a Caesar Salad that has four ounces of chicken in it and a side of French Fries. I ordered the BBQ Pulled Chicken Sandwich with French Fries. It took about 15 minutes for the food to arrive, which is a reasonable amount of time.
My wife looked over the pulled brown meat chicken (no white meat all) and was disappointed that there wasn't any breast meat and that is seemed like a fairly minuscule amount of chicken. White chicken meat is very healthy while the brown chicken meat not so much. She didn't eat much of the salad. And the french fries, although quite hot, were just regular old french fries. Nothing special.
My meal of the BBQ Chicken Sandwich on a brioche bun looked good, but turned out to be quite disappointing. The chicken, just like in my wife's salad, was all brown meat. (I wonder where they are using all of the white meat?) The chicken itself wasn't even warm! The cheese had melted, so it must have been hot at some time, just not when it arrived. Also, the bbq sauce wasn't a bbq sauce I liked, and i love a good bbq sauce. Mixed with the all brown cold chicken meat, it wasn't a good combination for me.
The fries were hot, though. And then there is the little cups of ketchup they bring out. I dipped a french fry into the red, bumpy stuff that I thought was ketchup, popped it into my mouth, and instantly stopped chewing. What the heck is this? I tried it one more time. Nope! I walked up the counter and asked if they had any Heinz ketchup. The girl behind the counter said there was a bottle behind me. Yep, one bottle. The ketchup they use is made in house and is not good at all, and i love ketchup!
I ate about a fourth of my sandwich and then polished off my fries with the Heinz ketchup. The sandwich went into the dumpster. My wife didn't eat her salad and it joined the sandwich to languish in the land of bad food that should never be eaten. She only ate about half of her fries. We walked out of the restaurant back to our room very disappointed. That was a waste of $35.00.
We then drove into town and had a frozen yogurt. That was excellent.
How does the Luna Cafe have a 4.2 star rating on Yelp? Not sure. Our meals were so bad that we couldn't eat them. We will never go back. Very disappointing as this was our first meal in...
Read moreI used to live in Ashland, and Luna was a nice little gem of a restaurant. Visiting friends, we chose Ashland Hills because of the convenience of a nice restaurant on premises. But boy, things have changed. (I just read that although it looks the same, ownership changed.)
We ate here twice this trip. Portions were ample, but the food was such that I didn’t want to even try to finish it. The meatloaf, once a go to, has transformed into a grey slab of something covered in a sauce that tastes mostly of salt. It was served with mashed potatoes that had great flavor but were served cold, along with mixed vegetables that were ‘meh’.
Also had the Indian-inspired chicken appetizer, and a mixed salad. The salad was large, a great deal for $9, but I swear it might have come out of a “bag of salad” from Sysco foods. The blue cheese dressing was served in a cup and wasn’t anywhere near as god as the bottled dressing you’d buy yourself at Safeway The chicken came in 6 large pieces, I couldn’t eat more than two… they were a little undercooked. I love Indian food, but I don’t think the cook knows what it’s supposed to look like.
The staff is friendly, no complaints with the bar options. If all I wanted was a beer, I’d have been great. No NA beer options though.
TLDR: food portions were good buy the quality here isn’t what it used to be. Wrote my first bad food review ever. Won’t plan to...
Read moreBack again and still the best Reuben sandwich in Southern Oregon! Could smell the smokey pastrami before it got to the table. Luna cafe is one of the great places to eat and chill in Ashland.
Original review - Staying at the hotel. I was skeptical about eating here for some reason. Ordered a Reuben with fries and a spinach and goat cheese salad to split. The Ruben was excellent, great "real" meat, the fries were crispy to perfection with large delicious salt flakes. House made ketchup took it to a "whole other level"! The salad was tart and slightly sweet and refreshing. Also asked for a side of their house made ranch which was also great, kind of a dill ranch. Deserts, yes please! Ordered a type of custard with a slightly tart rhubarb jelly on top. Not too sweet or heavy but perfect. Ordered a chocolate ganash, rich and perfect and a slice of rhubarb crumble pie. Everything was delicious and scratch made. It can get busy but soooo worth the wait. Sit inside (if smokey or hot) lots of inside seating or take it to your room. Nice selection of beers and wines. We are trapped here due to the fires and smoke, feels like we checked into the Hotel California but if this is it for us,we won't be complaining about the food...
