If I could give this place zero stars, I would. First, I brought some out-of-towners here based on the very good reviews. One of those people was actually from Texas, so he was excited to see what they would do. Since it was in a new location, I had high hopes.
We walked in and the main guy tried to push this jerk chicken on us even after we consistently said we were in the mood for ribs and brisket. Tried to add on an order of chicken even after I said no twice. So we ordered brisket to share, ribs, cornbread, and cowboy caviar. As we got our food, knowing we were going to share, I had to ask for plates, cups to put bbq sauce in. It's like they never served a meal before.
The brisket was dry, severely underseasoned, and no amount of bbq sauce could cover the lack of flavor and the pieces were cut like shredded beef, so no wonder it was dry.
The ribs were tough. I've seriously bought pre-made ribs at Pick 'n Save and Festival that were 10x better than these. They were obviously not low and slow, they were dry and had to rip the meat off the bones. Flavor was ok, but since I was busy ripping the meat off the bones, I honestly couldn't enjoy the flavor. Worst ribs I've had in the city so far. Honestly, family restaurants' ribs are better than these.
The cornbread he said was made the day before and he was excited about it. It came and was burnt on the bottom, dry as all heck, and they didn't serve any butter with it to dry to make it a little better. It was so dry it was crumbling as you take a bite.
Probably the only saving grace was the cowboy caviar. It's pretty sad that the corn and beans in the cowboy caviar was the only redeeming grace for a Texas BBQ joint.
Also tried the sweet tea which was so incredibly sweet that I had to dilute it with regular tea to even make it remotely ok. Way too much sugar.
As we were putting the brisket in a box, we pulled out a LONG hair that had been hidden in the brisket.
All in all, I wouldn't go to this place if it was the last place...
Read moreWhen I moved to Wisconsin after 34 years in Texas I was worried that I wouldn't be able to have real Texas BBQ unless I made it myself. That all changed when I visited Joe's. They have great BBQ. It is a very limited menu and written on a chalkboard next to the register when you come in. The place itself is very small with a few tables but they do offer BBQ to go and it appears thats mainly how people get the food.
We tried the brisket, chicken, and ribs. All were delicious. They have sides of spicy BBQ sauce or mild BBQ sauce to go along with the meal if you want. They also had mac and cheese, beans, and cole slaw available as sides in which we got all of them.
The only negative thing I would say would be they don't have any high chairs at all or a kids menu. They have plenty of space for them and its not exactly a quiet place that you wouldn't mind having kids. We made it work but it would have been nice to have a chair to but a kid in.
Bottom line is if you want some fantastic Texas BBQ. Joe's is the...
Read moreMy friend and I went for lunch. Nothing big. Nothing special. $30+ per person = over $60 for two people for lunch with no drinks except water. I wish I had double checked my bill or simply left right then. The food was average at best and required one of the two sauce selections to be used to add flavor. The beans, cole slaw, and potato salad were obviously from cans and plastic pails. The cornbread was old and stale. One bite was regretfully too much and there was no napkin to spit it out. You order standing up at a Formica table near the door, order from a chalkboard, and eat on sticky Formica tables from paper plates, plastic utensils and foam cups. The atmosphere has no personality whatsoever; painted sheet-rock walls, cheap western art poster-pictures. Formica tables. Not made to impress. No table service. Honestly, I don't see how this place can survive in Green Bay where there are so many other good eating...
